SEATTLE, Wash. - Guard Ricardo Maxwell (Jr., Cincinnati, OH/Withrow) and forward Jeffrey Parker (So., Richmond, CA/Salesian) led a balanced attack with 16 points each as Western Washington University grabbed its first conference road victory of the season, defeating Seattle Pacific University, 82-72, on Thursday, Feb. 5, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball contest at Royal Brougham Pavilion on the SPU campus.
Center Mac Johnson (Jr., Spokane/Gonazaga Prep) had 15 points and guard Kyle Impero (Jr., Everson/Nooksack Valley) added 14 for the Vikings, who improved to 12-10 overall and 5-7 in the GNAC.
Cory Hutsen and Shawn Reid each had 14 points for SPU, which fell to 16-6 overall and 8-4 in the GNAC with its second straight loss. Riley Stockton contributed 10points and nine rebounds for the Falcons, the defending GNAC regular-season and tournament champions.
The Vikings used a run of 12 straight points, holding SPU scoreless for nearly six minutes, to take a 22-10 lead with 8:34 left in half, and held a 35-26 lead at halftime.
WWU maintained the advantage in the second half by shooting 68.2 percent (15-of-22) from the field. SPU never got closer than seven points, and the Vikings led by as much as 20, 66-46, with six minutes left.
For the game, WWU shot 55.8 percent (29-of-52) from the field, and held the Falcons to 44.4 percent (28-of-63).
WWU's Anye Turner (Sr., Tumwater/Black Hills) blocked five shots and grabbed nine rebounds as did Johnson.
"Our guys have been working so hard, that's a nice win for them," said WWU coach Tony Dominguez. "They just hunkered down and played defense like they've been in practice. It was nice that they could show that tonight."
It was the first win of the season on an opponent's home floor for the Vikings, who last won a true road game with an 80-56 triumph at Saint Martin's on Feb. 27, 2014. They defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 72-66, on Dec. 19, 2014 at the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic in Las Vegas, Nevada.
WWU guard Jaamon Echols (Jr., Seattle/Rainier Beach), who was averaging a team-high 16.9 points a game, did not play as he is on an indefinite leave of absence for personal reasons.
The Vikings are at Montana State University Billings on Saturday, Feb. 7 (7 p.m.) for a GNAC contest.
