BILLINGS, Mont. - Forward Anye Turner (Sr., Tumwater/Black Hills) had a team-high 16 points and game-highs of 14 rebounds and four blocked shots as Western Washington University earned a sweep of its two-game road trip with a 75-65 victory over Montana State University Billings on Saturday, Feb. 7, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball contest at Alterowitz Gymnasium on the MSUB campus.
Five players reached double figures for the Vikings, who improved to 13-10 overall and 6-7 in the GNAC with their third straight victory.
Jace Anderson had a game-high 18 points for MSUB, which fell to 5-18 overall and 3-10 in the GNAC with its fifth loss in the last six games.
The Vikings used a 15-2 run, with five different players scoring, to take a 23-12 lead with 8:42 left in the first half. They never led by less than eight the rest of the period and held a 35-26 lead at halftime.
MSUB opened the second half with eight straight points by Anderson to close the gap to one, 35-34, with 17:26 to play.
The margin was still just three, 45-42, with 11:42 left, before the Vikings took control of the contest with 12 straight points. That gave WWU a 57-42 lead with 6:47 left, and the margin was never less than eight after that.
Center Mac Johnson (Jr., Spokane/Gonzaga Prep) and guard Kyle Impero (Jr., Everson/Nooksack Valley) each had 12 points for the Vikings, and guard Ricardo Maxwell (Jr., Cincinnati, OH/Withrow) and forward Joey Schreiber (So., Renton/Eastside Catholic) each had 10.
Turner's point and rebound totals were both his third-best of the season. He entered the contest second nationally in NCAA Division II in blocks with 66, having five in an 82-72 triumph at Seattle Pacific on Thursday. Saturday's contest was his 11th this season with four or more blocks.
The Vikings host arch-rival Central Washington University on Thursday, Feb. 12 (7 p.m.), in a GNAC counter.
