Box Score Oct. 20, 2016

Box Score

SEATTLE, Wash. â€" The top-ranked Western Washington University women's soccer team put together a dominating performance in a 4-0 victory over rival Seattle Pacific Thursday evening in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match at Interbay Soccer Stadium.

Western remained undefeated on the season at 14-0-1 overall and improved to 9-0-0 in GNAC play. The shutout was WWU's fifth consecutive and 12th in 15 games this season. SPU, ranked No. 5 in the NCAA II West Region, falls to 8-3-3 overall and 5-2-2 in league play.

"We did a good job of getting off to a quick start, not just with the early goal, but the constant pressure," said head coach Travis Connell. "It was a dominating performance against one of our rivals, and that is huge. This team takes the field expecting to make a statement, and that's what they did. And they are not content, we played add-on today, which is awesome. The attitude and culture of this team right now is outstanding."

The Vikings got on the board in the 14th minute on a converted penalty kick by Elise Aylward (Renton, WA/Lindbergh). Caitlyn Jobanek (Springfield, OR/Thurston) was fouled in the box by Brooke Lancaster setting up WWU's second penalty kick of the season.

WWU went up 2-0 in the waning moments of the first half in the 42nd minute when freshman Emily Nelson (Puyallup, WA/Bellarmine Prep) scored her first career goal off a corner kick by junior Emily Webster (Bellingham, WA/Sehome).

Western didn't let down in the second half with two more goals to bring the final score to 4-0, the most ever by the Vikings in the 37 head-to-head meetings against the Falcons. Jobanek scored on a penalty kick in the 61st minute and freshman Peyton Chick (Renton, WA/Kentridge) added goal on a breakaway in the 64th minute.

The Vikings held a 29-8 advantage on shots for the game with a 14-3 advantage in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Homer (Puyallup, WA) recorded her 10th clean sheet of the season recording three saves.

SPU had its best opportunity on a penalty kick in the 84th minute, but Kaylin Willis shot wide left to preserve the WWU shutout.

The Vikings return to play Saturday hosting Central Washington in a 7 pm match at Harrington Field in Bellingham. The match vs. the Wildcats will be the final regular-season match of the season with a special pregame ceremony honoring the five seniors on the roster.
