Weekly Sport Reviews...

  • WWU Athletics: Women's Soccer (17 Games), Volleyball (11 Matches) and Men's Soccer (3 Games) all have current winning streaks...the three teams have combined to go 13-0-1 since competition beginning on October 15.
  • Volleyball (16-6, 12-2 GNAC): Recorded a pair of three-game sweeps last week over Western Oregon and Concordia...extended winning streak to 11 consecutive matches, one of the top 10 longest current winning streaks in Division II...sits alone in 2nd place in the GNAC at 12-2 in league play, just behind first-place Alaska Anchorage (13-1)...WWU beat the Seawolves in five sets October 22 to snap UAA's 20-match winning streak...7 of the 11 wins during the streak have come in sweeps...WWU has 6 regular-season matches remaining (4 at home) before a hopeful visit to a fifth consecutive NCAA II West Regional (December 1-3)...the Vikings head back to the road this week to face Northwest Nazarene (Thursday, 6 pm PT) and Central Washington (Saturday, 7 pm)...Kayleigh Harper moved into 15th place in the WWU record books with 256 career blocks...Harper leads the GNAC with a .345 hitting percentage...WWU leads the GNAC with a team hitting percentage of .250 (2nd place is UAA at .231)...Abby Phelps is 9th in the league with 3.11 kills/set and 8th with 4.32 digs/set...Arielle Turner is 2nd in the GNAC with 0.45 aces/set (36 aces) and 10th with 3.50 points/set.
  • Women's Soccer (17-0-1, 12-0-0 GNAC): Completed the regular season with a 17-0-1 record and won a record fifth consecutive GNAC Championship...became the second team in GNAC history to finish a perfect season (no ties), joining the Seattle Pacific team in 2007 that went 14-0-0...after a season-opening scoreless tie at Sonoma State, WWU has won 17 consecutive games...ranked No. 1 in the nation for three consecutive weeks...heads into the GNAC Championships as the No. 1 seed and will play tournament host Simon Fraser on Thursday at 7 pm in Burnaby, BC...leads the GNAC in nearly every offensive and defensive statistical category...posted a shutout in 7 of last 8 matches to lead the conference with 14 shutouts (school record is 16)...goals against average of 0.27 is in the top 5 in NCAA Division II...18 players have scored at least one goal this season, with 9 players having multiple goals...seniors Caitlyn Jobanek and Elise Aylward are tied for the team lead (T3rd in GNAC) with 7 goals...both are also tied for the team lead and T3rd in the GNAC with 18 points...Gabriela Pelogi (5 goals, 6 assists) is tied for 6th in the GNAC with 16 points...Ashley Homer is amongst the NCAA II leaders with a 0.24 goals against average and posted 11 shutouts...allowed only 4 goals in 1483 minutes in net, looking to break the GNAC record for fewest goals allowed in a season (6 goals allowed by SPU's Jennifer Hull in 2003)...the defense has limited opposing teams to only 5 goals this season and 31 shots on goal (113 total shots)...WWU has combined to go 93-9-7 over the last five seasons (since 2012), the 2nd-best winning percentage (.885) amongst all Division II teams during this time frame...broke the GNAC record for consecutive home wins with 4-1 win over Central Washington on October 22...undefeated in last 42 regular-season GNAC matches (38-0-4) dating back to 2013...the NCAA Regionals will be held Nov. 10-12 at campus sites, with the tournament field being announced next Monday at 3 pm on NCAA.com.
  • Men's Soccer (7-4-4, 4-3-3 GNAC): Have a three-game winning streak, all shutouts, to improve to 7-4-4 overall and 4-3-3 in GNAC play...currently tied for 4th place in the GNAC with two regular-season matches remaining...are 6-1-1 at Harrington Field this season...host nationally-ranked and league champion Simon Fraser on Thursday at Harrington Field for Senior Night (7 pm)...travel to Portland to face Concordia on Saturday (4 pm)...assured of a winning regular-season record for the third time in the last four seasons...current three-game winning streak includes shutouts over Saint Martin's (3-0), Northwest Nazarene (2-0) and Montana State Billings (2-0)...first time with three consecutive clean sheets since the last three games of the 2010 season (7-0 vs. NNU, 2-0 vs. SMU, 2-0 vs. SPU)...wins last week came against NNU (#7) and MSUB (#8), both ranked in the latest NSCAA West Region Poll...Vikings have totaled 7 shutouts this season (2nd in GNAC), tied for 3rd-most in program history (record is 9 set in 2001)...junior GK Tyler Visten is 2nd in the GNAC with 6 shutouts, tied for 5th-most in a single-season in WWU history (record is 9 by Darin Laier in 2001)...Visten is 2nd in the GNAC with a 0.87 goals against average...junior Anthony Dean is tied for 3rd in the GNAC with 8 goals (leaders have 9) and tied for 4th with 20 points (leader has 24).
  • Cross Country: Were off last week after finishing 3rd (men) and 4th (women) at the GNAC Championships held October 22 at Lake Padden in Bellingham...junior Isaac Derline finished 3rd in the men's race to equal the highest finish by a WWU individual since Dak Riek in 2012...junior Lillianna Stelling just missed All-GNAC honors finishing 12th in the women's 6K race...the Vikings will compete at the NCAA II West Regional this Saturday held at Amend Park in Billings, Montana...the top 5 men's teams and top 6 women's teams from the regional will advance to the NCAA II Championships in Saint Leo, Florida...14 student-athletes were named GNAC Academic All-Stars for having a GPA of 3.2 or better...both programs were ranked No. 8 in the USTFCCCA West Region poll last week.
  • Men's Basketball: Opened the preseason with the annual Blue-White Game October 22 with senior point guard Taylor Stafford (28 points, 4 steals), junior forward Deandre Dickson (24 points, 16 rebounds) and redshirt freshman forward Daulton Hommes (23 points, 9 rebounds) all scoring 20+ points...the Vikings will play a pair of exhibition games this week hosting Capilano on Tuesday (7 pm, Whatcom CC) and traveling to Seattle on Thursday for a tilt with Division I University of Washington (7 pm, Alaska Airlines Arena)...Jeffrey Parker (unanimous), Taylor Stafford and Trey Drechsel were named to the GNAC Preseason All-Conference Team...WWU was picked to finish 2nd in the annual GNAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • Women's Basketball: Beat Quest 105-50 in an exhibition game Sunday to improve to 2-0 in exhibition play...senior Taylor Peacocke score a game-high 21 points on 8-for-12 shooting, hitting on 5-of-7 three-pointers...five players scored in double-digits and two others scored 9 points apiece in the balanced offensive effort...team shot 60.6% from the field (43-for-71) and was 11-for-21 on three-pointers...in two exhibition games so far the Vikings have averaged 94.5 points per game with a 54.6% shooting percentage (77-for-141)...from three-point range the team is 20-for-32 (54.6%), with Peacocke connecting on 8-of-10 three-point attempts...WWU has one more exhibition game Saturday vs. Puget Sound (1 pm, Whatcom CC) and will open the 2016-17 season at the West Region Challenge November 11-12 in Seattle vs. Humboldt State and Fresno Pacific...Taylor Peacocke, Kiana Gandy and Tia Briggs were unanimous first-team selections to the Preseason All-GNAC team...the Vikings were picked to win the GNAC in the preseason coaches poll.
  • Women's Golf: Completed the fall season with a 3rd-place finish at the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate in Waikoloa, Hawai'i...Stephanie Sewell and Brooke Branigan were the highest placing Vikings in the 31-player field...Sewell had the lowest scoring average amongst the six players to see action during the fall season at 77.90, appearing in 5 tournaments (10 total rounds) and recording four top 15 finishes...junior Jenn Paul was 2nd with a 78.40 scoring average and senior Audrey Orem was 3rd at 79.50...Paul enters the spring season with the best career scoring average in program history (76.42, +4.50 relative to par)...WWU is scheduled to open the spring season February 6-7, 2017 at the Point Loma Reach at Riverwalk Golf Club.
  • Rowing: Competed at the inaugural The Island Head Regatta on Lake Whatcom over the weekend (hosted by the WWU Men's Crew team)...will take part in the Head of the Lake Regatta this Saturday in Seattle on Montlake Cut...finished 3rd in the NCAA II National Championships last season...opens the spring regatta season March 11 at the PLU Regatta on American Lake in Lakewood.

Men's Soccer (Defense) - Tyler Visten (GK, Jr., Mount Vernon, WA):

  • Posted a pair of 2-0 shutouts against regionally ranked teams Northwest Nazarene and Montana State Billings.
  • Made 4 saves vs. MSUB in a game that was scoreless until the 81st minute.
  • Ranks 2nd in the GNAC with 0.87 Goals Against Average, 3rd in save percentage (.778) and 4th in saves (3.27/game, 49 saves).
  • 2nd in the GNAC with 6 saves, tied for 5th-most in single-season WWU history (record is 9).

Men's Soccer (Offense) - Eleazar Galvan (MF, Sr., Chelan, WA:

  • Tied for the GNAC lead with 4 points last week (Goal, 2 Assists).
  • Credited with the game-winner with a majestic, curling goal in the 81st minute vs. MSUB.
  • For the season is 2nd on the team with 10 points (3 goals, 4 assists).
  • Over last 5 games has 2 goals and 3 assists (7 points).

Volleyball (Offense) - Kayleigh Harper (MB, So., Oak Harbor, WA):

  • Led the Vikings offensively with 22.0 points in sweeps over Western Oregon and Concordia.
  • Averaged a team-high 3.17 kills per game while hitting at a .357 clip (19 kills, 4 errors, 42 attacks).
  • Added 4 total blocks to move into 15th place in the WWU record books with 256 career blocks.
  • Leads the GNAC with a .345 hitting percentage, 8th in blocks/game (1.06), 13th in points/game (3.39) and 18th in kills/game (2.70).

Volleyball (Defense) - Mae Thungc (Libero, RS-Fr., Kent, WA):

  • Averaged 5.50 digs per game in sweeps over Western Oregon and Concordia.
  • Recorded 21 digs vs. WOU and 12 vs. CU.
  • Recorded double-digits in digs in 13 of 14 matches this season.
  • Ranks 6th in the GNAC with a season average of 4.71 digs per game, tops amongst conference freshman.

Women's Soccer (Offense) - Emily Webster (MF, Jr., Bellingham, WA):

  • Tied for the GNAC lead in games last week with 3 points, recording a goal and assist in the 2-0 win at Montana State Billings.
