AUSTIN, Texas - The Western Washington University women's golf team finished in 9th place at the opening tournament of the spring season at the St. Edward's Invitational played at Onion Creek Club.
The Vikings battled cold and windy conditions in the second day of the tournament, slipping from a tie for 5th place to begin the day to the 9th-place finish at 625 (65-over-par). Despite posting a 37-over-par round Tuesday (317), WWU finished just four strokes back of 5th place.
Sophomore Jenn Paul (Bellingham, WA) continued her excellent season finishing in a tie for 8th place with a 36-hole score of 11-over-par 151. She bounced back from a 7-over-par 77 yesterday to post a 4-over 74 today (tied for the 5th-best round today). Paul has finished in the top 10 in all four tournaments she has appeared in this season.
Also turning in a standout performance as freshman Stephanie Sewell (Kent, WA/Kentridge) finishing in a tie for 13th place at 13-over-par 153. This marked the second top 15 finish for Sewell in her five collegiate tournaments.
"It was a rough day conditions-wise on the course with the wind and we just didn't handle ourselves as well as some of the other teams," said 11th-year head coach Bo Stephan. "We'll be working hard on improving over the next week and look forward to getting back on the course in completion in early March."
Florida Tech won the team title by a 10-stroke margin (+37, 597) over defending NCAA II National Champion Indianapolis (+47, 607). West Texas A&M's Glory Jangthongsiri defeated Florida Tech's Felicia Leftinger on the first playoff hole to win the individual medalist honors after both finished at 6-over-par (146) for the 36-hole tournament.
WWU returns to action March 7-8 at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in at Vallejo, Calif. (hosted by Cal State East Bay).
