LACEY, Wash. - The Western Washington University Vikings closed out the 2015-16 regular season with a 103-86 loss to Saint Martin's Saturday evening in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball game at Marcus Pavilion.
Despite losing seven of their final eight games, the Vikings season continues as the No. 6 seed in next week's GNAC Tournament. With the 88-81 overtime victory by Central Washington over Alaska Anchorage, WWU qualified as the No. 6 seed via the league tiebreaker rule. WWU held the tiebreaker over Saint Martin's by way of a 1-3 record vs. teams in the conference that had a .750 or better winning percentage in GNAC play (SMU was 0-4 vs. Western Oregon and Alaska).
WWU will play No. 3 seed Alaska Anchorage Thursday in the GNAC Tournament at Marcus Pavilion in Lacey.
The Vikings ended the regular season at 15-14 overall and 9-11 in GNAC play (tied for 6th). Saint Martin's ended its season 15-13 overall and 9-11 in conference play.
Junior forward Jeffrey Parker (Richmond, CA/Salesian) scored a game-high 32 points on 10-for-17 shooting from the field, including 5-for-9 from 3-point range. Parker moved into the No. 12 spot in school history with 1,333 career points.
Redshirt freshman Trey Drechsel (Woodinville, WA/Cedar Park Christian) contributed 14 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field and senior guard Kyle Impero (Everson, WA/Nooksack Valley/Whatcom CC) added 13 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists.
The Vikings shot 48.2% from the field, but couldn't match the hot shooting of the Saints who converted 58.1% of their shots (36-for-62), including 16-for-25 (64.0%) from 3-point range.
Trey Ingram, Cole Preston and Tyler Copp each had 20 points for the Saints.
Western was without starting point guard Ricardo Maxwell (16.1 points per game, 4.6 assists per game) for the second consecutive game due to a concussion.
