March 12, 2016 PLU Invite - Results
LAKEWOOD, Wash. - The Western Washington University women's rowing program opened the 2016 season with a successful showing at the PLU Invite on American Lake.
The Vikings, ranked No. 7 in the Division II preseason coaches poll, won four of six races in the regatta that included WWU, Pacific Lutheran University (host), University of Puget Sound, University of Portland, Seattle University and Seattle Pacific University.
"I thought we came out and did really well for the opening race of the season," said 18th-year head coach John Fuchs. "We started out great winning the first three races. We learned some things, did some things well and went up against some good competition. I am overall happy with how we raced to start the season."
WWU's varsity eight beat Portland and PLU in the first session completing the 2k course in 6:58.4, beating Portland by nearly four seconds. In the second session the Vikings placed 2nd racing a faster time (6:57.9), but were out-paced by Portland (6:52.8).
The Vikings will return to race competition March 26 in Redwood Shores, Calif., against the Stanford Lightweights and West Region foe UC San Diego. Western will host a home regatta this season as well, with NCAA II Central Region power Central Oklahoma and Seattle Pacific competing on Lake Samish on April 23.
