SEASIDE, Calif. - The Western Washington University women's golf team is in a tie for 5th-place after the first day of the Otter Invitational at the par 72 Blackhorse Golf Course. The two-day, 36-hole tournament is being hosted by Cal State University Monterey Bay.
The Vikings, ranked No. 26 in the recent GolfStat Division II poll, combined top four scores (out of five golfers) netted a 31-over-par 319. WWU is tied for 5th in the tournament, but only 6 strokes back of leader Tarleton State (+25, 313) and three strokes back of third place.
"Our trouble today was on the greens, they are very firm and undulating and you have to really have to hit the ball in the right spot on the green to make putts, and we just didn't do that today," said 11th-year head coach Bo Stephan. "Even with a shaky round today, there are a lot of teams that are bunched together and hopefully we can put together a solid round tomorrow to make a run at it."
Junior Audrey Orem (Bellingham, WA) led the Vikings turning in a 5-over-par 77, tied for 6th in the 96-player field. Sophomore Jenn Paul (Bellingham, WA) is tied for 24th after a first-round 79 (+7).
Ann Parmerter of Dallas Baptist will head into the second round with the individual lead after firing a 2-over-par 74 on Monday.
The final 18 holes will be played tomorrow on Blackhorse Golf Course.Pos.
