VALLEJO, Calif. - The Western Washington University women's golf team is in a tie for 6th-place after the first day of the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout at the par 72 Hiddenbrooke Golf Course. The two-day, 36-hole tournament is being hosted by Cal State University East Bay.
The Vikings combined top four scores (out of five golfers) netted a 17-over-par 305, just two strokes back of 3rd place. St. Mary's (TX) holds the 18-hole lead with a first-round team total of 11-over-par 299.
"Overall I thought the girls played solid and were really close to putting a very good round together," said 11th-year head coach Bo Stephan. "Jenn (Paul) and Stephanie (Sewell) played solid the whole round, and I thought Kristen (Hansen) had one of the better ball-striking rounds I've seen out of a WWU golfer this year but just couldn't convert some putts. We're close to some teams just ahead of us so we'll be aggressive tomorrow and try to play catch-up."
Sophomore Jenn Paul (Bellingham, WA) turned in another solid round with a 2-over-par 74 to tie for 8th place (4 bogeys, 2 birdies, 12 pars). Paul entered the tournament with a season scoring average of 75.38 and has finished in the top 10 in all four of her tournament appearances in 2015-16.
Senior Kristen Hansen (Spokane, WA/Mead) turned in her third-lowest round of the season with a 3-over-par 75 and is in a tie for 14th place.
Freshman Stephanie Sewell (Kent, WA/Kentridge) cracked the top 20 firing a 5-over-par 77.
Emily Leung (Simon Fraser) and Roanne Matta (Academy of Art) are tied atop the leaderboard after both shooting a 2-under-par 70 in the first round.
The final 18 holes will be played tomorrow with a shotgun start at 8 am.
