April 1, 2016 GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The Western Washington University women's golf team is in 8th place after the first day of the Mustang Intercollegiate played on the par 72 Palm Valley Golf Club. The two-day, 36-hole tournament is being hosted by Western New Mexico University.
The Vikings, ranked No. 19 in the recent GolfStat Division II poll, combined top four scores (out of five golfers) netted a 14-over-par 302. WWU is in 8th place in the team standings, but only 5 strokes off the top 5. Tournament leader Tarleton State leads all teams at -3 (285) after the first 18 holes of the tournament.
Junior Brooke Branigan (Bellingham, WA) turned in the best day of the five Vikings players shooting a 2-over-par 74. Junior Audrey Orem (Bellingham, WA) and senior Kristen Hansen (Spokane, WA/Mead) are one stroke back of Branigan in a tie for 28th place shooting 3-over-par 75 on Friday.
Marisa Toivonen of Augustana (SD) leads the120-player field after carding a first-round 68 (-4).
The final 18 holes will be played tomorrow at Palm Valley Golf Club beginning at 7:30 am.
