GNAC Women's Golf - First Round Results

COEUR d'ALENE, Idaho -- The Western Washington University women's golf team is in 2nd place after the first round of the 2016 GNAC Championships played Monday at Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course.

The Vikings totaled a team score of 28-over-par (312) on the par 71 course. They trail Simon Fraser by 4 strokes heading into tomorrow's final round. WWU holds a comfortable 9-stroke advantage over third-place Northwest Nazarene.

Western was led by senior Kristen Hansen (Spokane, WA/Mead) with a 6-over-par 77. Hansen, who is the defending medalist from last year's GNAC Championship, carded 12 pars and 6 bogeys in the first round to land in the top 5.

Junior Audrey Orem (Bellingham, WA) and freshman Hannah Drake (Pocatello, ID/Century) are tied for 6th place after shooting matching 7-over-par 78. Orem tied for the first-day lead carding three birdies.

GNAC scoring average leader Jenn Paul (So., Bellingham, WA) is tied for 9th place after a first-round 79 (+8) in the 30-player field.

"Today was frustrating, but the positive is that most of the mistakes we made are really avoidable heading into tomorrow's final round," said 11th-year head coach Bo Stephan. "We need to come out a little more focused and ready to go tomorrow."

Simon Fraser holds the 18-hole lead looking to end WWU's streak of five consecutive GNAC Tournament titles. SFU's Michelle Waters (+3, 74) is leading tournament with teammate Breanna Croxen tied for 2nd (+5, 76)

The final 18 holes will be played tomorrow at Coeur d'Alene Resort to determine the 2016 GNAC Championships winner. The Vikings will begin teeing off at 8:20 am on hole 10. Live results can be tracked via GolfStat.
