COEUR d'ALENE, Idaho - The Western Washington University women's golf team finished in 2nd place at the 2016 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships held Monday-Tuesday at Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course.

The Vikings finished the 36-hole tournament with a score of 57-over-par (625), eight strokes back of team champion Simon Fraser (+49, 617). WWU finished comfortably ahead of third-place Saint Martin's by 9 strokes.

Sophomore Jenn Paul (Bellingham, WA) turned in a 3-over-par 74 in Tuesday's second round to move up six spots finishing in a tie for 3rd place. Paul led the 30-player tournament with six birdies and was tied for the lead playing the Par 4 holes at 3-over-par.

Junior Audrey Orem (Bellingham, WA) finished 5th overall at 13-over-par 155, turning in a 6-over-par 77 Tuesday.

"We played poorly down the stretch when we had a chance to really close the gap," said head coach Bo Stephan. "Jenn and Audrey really struck the ball well and put together good rounds."

Senior Kristen Hansen (Spokane, WA/Mead) rounded out the top 10 at 16-over-par 158.

Simon Fraser's Michelle Waters won individual medalist honors after beating Saint Martin's Jen Liedes in a one-hole playoff. Both players finished the tournament at 9-over-par 151. Liedes fired an even-par 71 in Tuesday's second round to break the conference championship single-round record previously held by WWU's Claire Rachor (73 - April 22, 2013).

The Vikings will now wait for the NCAA II regional field to be announced next Monday (April 25) at 1 pm.

"I feel we have a lot of good golf left to play and feel good about our chances to move on to regionals," added Stephan. "We are a good golf team, this week just didn't go our way. Hats off to Simon Fraser as they played a really good tournament."
