April 30, 2016 GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The Western Washington University women's rowing squad won all three races they competed in during the wind-shortened first day of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on Lake Natoma.
The Women's Varsity 8 heats were cancelled due to extremely windy conditions on the lake and will be held tomorrow morning at 8 am, with the finals scheduled for the early afternoon.
The Vikings won all three heats they raced in to advance to the finals in the Novice 4, Varsity 8 and the 2nd Varsity 8.
"Our goal today was to get to the finals in each event, and we did that," said head coach John Fuchs. "There were really tough conditions and pretty rough water, but the team handed themselves well and got the job done."
The Varsity 4 turned in the most dominating performance of the day finishing well ahead of UC Davis in the first heat of the event. The Vikings finished in open water at 7:58.700, over 19 seconds ahead of UCD.
The 2nd Varsity 8 also earned a win in its heat in 7:24.000, beating UC Santa Barbara by over 6 seconds.
The Novice 4 boat beat Long Beach State by over 3 seconds, finishing the 2,000-meter course in 8:42.300.
The Vikings entered the regatta ranked No. 3 in the recent NCAA Division II CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll and hold the top spot in the NCAA II Regional Rankings (V8 - 1st, V4 - 2nd, Team - 1st).
