GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The Western Washington University women's rowing Varsity 4 beat Mercyhurst in head-to-head action in the repechage to advance to Sunday's Grand Final in the 2016 NCAA Division II Rowing Championships on Lake Natoma.
WWU finished with nearly a three second advantage over Mercyhurst leading wire-to-wire to join WWU's Varsity 8 in Sunday's Grand Final.
"They took care of business today and raced really well. They did exactly what they were supposed to do, conserving as much energy as possible and still qualify," said 18th year head coach John Fuchs. "We are excited for tomorrow. Both crews are ready to go!"
The Varsity 4 will match up against Barry and Central Oklahoma at 9:24 am, with the Varsity 8 lining up against Barry, Central Oklahoma and Humboldt at 9:48 am. Barry is the defending NCAA II Champion after winning both the V8 and V4 last year in Gold River.
The scoring system for tomorrow's Grand Finals is the following:

This is the 15th time in the last 16 seasons the WWU rowing program will compete for a NCAA II National Championship. The Vikings won seven consecutive national championships from 2005-2011, a feat unmatched by any NCAA program in any sport.

WWU History in NCAA Rowing Championships:
- WWU won seven consecutive Division II national titles from 2005 to 2011, being the first NCAA school in any division to achieve that distinction. The Vikings placed among the top three nationally from 2002 to 2014 with its four and eight reaching grand finals every time during that stretch.
- Appeared in 14 consecutive NCAA II Rowing National Championships from 2001-2014.
- Placed 2nd (2002, 2003, 2012), 3rd (2013 & 2014) and 4th (2004) at the NCAA Championships.
