GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The Western Washington University women's rowing Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 crews finished in third place in their respective Grand Finals to claim a third-place finish for the Vikings at the 2016 NCAA Division II Rowing Championships on Lake Natoma.
WWU finished with 10 team points, with Barry University (20 points) claiming their second consecutive national title and Central Oklahoma (15 points) finishing in second place.
The Varsity 8 finished in 3rd place in the Grand Final to earn 6 team points. Central Oklahoma overcame the Vikings in the final 500 meters of the course to claim second place in the race and in the overall team standings. Barry repeated as the V8 champion in a time of 6:44.184.
The Varsity 4 finished 3rd in the Grand Final to pick up 4 team points, clocking 7:45.745 on the 2,000-meter course. Barry won the gold medal in a commanding time of 7:36.208 and Central Oklahoma was 2nd in 7:41.915.
This season marked the 15th time in the last 16 seasons the WWU rowing program has competed for a NCAA II National Championship. The Vikings won seven consecutive national championships from 2005-2011, a feat unmatched by any NCAA program in any sport.

WWU History in NCAA Rowing Championships:
- WWU won seven consecutive Division II national titles from 2005 to 2011, being the first NCAA school in any division to achieve that distinction. The Vikings placed among the top three nationally from 2002 to 2014 with its four and eight reaching grand finals every time during that stretch.
- Appeared in 14 consecutive NCAA II Rowing National Championships from 2001-2014.
- Placed 2nd (2002, 2003, 2012), 3rd (2013, 2014, 2016) and 4th (2004) at the NCAA II Championships.

Drive:
Senior student-athlete Kristin Foster produced a 15-minute documentary titled Drive that captures the essence of rowing and a behind-the-scenes look at the WWU Rowing program. Foster produced, filmed and edited the film for her senior honors project as a Visual Journalism major.
