June 9, 2016 BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Western Washington University Athletics program finished 26th among 307 NCAA Division II schools in the final 2015-16 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings.
The Vikings finished in the top 50 in the Directors' Cup Standings for the 13th consecutive year and placed inside the top 30 for the eighth time. WWU was 36th in the standings in 2014-15 and 20th in 2013-14.
The Vikings totaled 441.50 points, which included 239.50 in the fall and 202.00 in the spring. WWU has had 15 top 50 national finishes in the 18-year history of the all-sports award, and was among the top 20 in seven consecutive seasons from 2007-08 to 2013-14. The school's highest finishes were 6th in 2009-10 and 7th in 2010-11.
The 2015-16 sports season included several standout performances, including women's soccer and volleyball reaching the Final Four, rowing finishing 3rd in the NCAA II Championships and women's cross country recording a 6th-place finish at the national meet. Men's and women's golf both advanced to the NCAA Regional and men's and women's basketball both reached the semifinal of the GNAC Tournament.
WWU's national placing was the second highest among Great Northwest Athletic Conference schools with Alaska Anchorage finishing in a school-record 8th place with 570.50 points. Simon Fraser was third-best amongst GNAC schools in 55th place (308.00) and Seattle Pacific was 67th (286.00).
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's NCAA finish in up to 14 sports - seven women's and seven men's.
Grand Valley State repeated as the Division II all-sports champion, its 11th Director's Cup Division II trophy.
WWU was the GNAC all-sports champion for the eighth consecutive year and for the 12th time in the 15-year history of the league.
While having success in competition, WWU student-athletes continued to be outstanding in the classroom. Using the NCAA Academic Success Rate, WWU was at 87 percent, 14 percentage points better than the NCAA II national number of 73 percent.
