BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Sophomore forward Gabriela Pelogi scored the golden goal in the 93rd minute to lead No. 9 Western Washington University to a 1-0 overtime victory over Notre Dame de Namur in non-conference action Saturday at Harrington Field.
The Vikings (3-0-1) remained undefeated on the season while running their winning streak to three consecutive games. WWU has not allowed a goal in the four matches this season.
"It's good to get an overtime victory as it prepares you for games late in the season," said 14th-year head coach Travis Connell. "Today we relied heavily on our defense and they did a great job. Today was a team win...we were able to play 20 players and get everyone involved. To win in that fashion is very exciting."
Pelogi (Federal Way, WA) took a pass and cut back to the middle of the field and used the outside of her foot for a well-placed finish from 15 yards to the lower left corner. It was Pelogi's second career golden goal, also driving home the game winner in the 97th minute in overtime Oct. 8 last season vs. rival Central Washington.
Junior goalkeeper Ashley Homer (Puyallup, WA/College of Saint Rose) continued her scoreless streak, recording her fourth clean sheet of the season. Homer has not allowed a goal in 382:58 in net this season with 8 saves, including a pair vs. NDNU.
The Vikings held a 20-6 advantage in shots and a 10-2 edge in shots on goal.
NDNU goalkeeper Abigail Cebrero recorded 9 saves, including a pair of diving stops in the first half.
The Vikings return to action Wednesday night hosting No. 7 UC San Diego at 7 pm at Harrington Field. The Tritons and Vikings are the top ranked teams in the NSCAA West Region poll.
