GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- The Western Washington University women's golf team is in seventh place after the first round of the season-opening Western New Mexico University Fall Intercollegiate played Monday at the Golf Club of Estrella outside of Phoenix.
The Vikings carded a first-round score of 305 (top 4 scorers count) to enter the clubhouse at 17-over-par. WWU is just one shot out of the top 5 in the 20-team tournament and 6 shots back of second place. Tarleton State leads the tournament at 9-over-par (297) after the first 18 holes.
"I thought for the most part we really struck the ball well and played well for our first tournament," said head coach Bo Stephan, who is in his 12th year guiding the Vikings. "We were a little rusty around the greens, but that is a little to be expected. I am looking forward to making a run tomorrow and getting better with each round."
Sophomore Nicole Miller (Renton, WA/Kennedy/North Idaho College) made her Western debut in memorable fashion, shooting a 1-over-par 73 on the 6,087 layout to hold a tie for 7th place in the 106-player field. The transfer from North Idaho College carded 15 pars, one birdie and 2 bogeys in her first round with the Vikings.
"Nicole was very steady today and was a par machine," said Stephan. "A very nice debut for her."
Sophomore Hannah Drake (Pocatello, ID/Century) also cracked the top 20 in a tie for 17th place with a 3-over-par 75 in the first round.
Two-time GNAC co-Player of the Year Jenn Paul (Bellingham, WA) is tied for 42nd with a first-round 6-over-par 78.
The 36-hole tournament concludes Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 7:30 am.
