Vikings Open Indoor Season with Strong Performances

SEATTLE, Wash. - Led by three NCAA Division II provisional qualifying efforts, the Western Washington University track & field program turned in several strong performances at the UW Indoor Preview on Saturday at Dempsey Indoor Center.

Juinior Anna Paradee posted a provisional pole vault height while seniors Brittany Grant and Andrew Wise each recorded provisional times in their respective 3,000m races. Paradee's performance ranks as the 4th-best in WWU history while Grant and Wise times each improved upon previous personal bests that had ranked as 3rd-best among top WWU times on respective lists. Both new times recorded Saturday rank 3rd on respective lists among top times in program history.

Notable performances from WWU included the following (full results below):

Pole Vault (Women): Anna Paradee (Jr., Tacoma, WA/Decatur) tied for 6th in the pole vault with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 3.68m (12-3/4). The height is the 4th-best in program history.

3,000m (Women): Brittany Grant (Port Townsend, WA) was 20th in the 3,000m with a time 9:56.22, recording an NCAA II provisional time with the 3rd-best time in WWU history (previously had 3rd-best time from 2016 season) while Lillianna Stelling (Jr., Langley, WA/South Whidbey) placed 27th (10:05.08) in recording the 4th-best time in program history.

3,000m (Men): Andrew Wise (Denver, CO/East) placed 20th in the 3,000m in a time of 8:23.18, posting an NCAA II provisional qualifying time and recording the 3rd-best time in WWU history (previously had 3rd-best time from 2016 season).

60m dash (Women): Macie Allen (Fr., Gresham, OR/Barlow) posted the 10th-fastest time in WWU history, placing 22nd in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.08.

Mile (Women): Aundrea Koger (Fr., Osage City, KS/Osage City) recorded the 10th-fastest time in WWU history during her indoor collegiate debut, with a time of 5:18.00, finishing 23rd.

20-lb Weight Throw (Women): A pair of Vikings turn in strong performances as senior Megan Mortensen (Tacoma, WA/Franklin Pierce) placed 8th with a mark of 14.79m (48-6 ¼), the 2nd-best mark in WWU history and just over 2 inches shy of the school record. Sophia Roberts (Ventura, CA) finished 16th (12.98m, 42-7) with the 3rd-best mark in program history.

Shot Put (Women): Kaylie Greninger (Jr., Sammamish, WA/Skyline) posted the 8th-best shot put mark in WWU history with a distance of 10.73m (35-2 ¼), placing 18th. Mortensen was 12th (11.51m, 37 9 ¼), but the performance did not better her school-record effort from 2016.

Triple Jump (Men): Somit Chhim (Jr., Kelso, WA) placed 8th in the triple jump with a mark of 13.27m (43-6 ½), the 10th-best mark in WWU history.

Shot Put, Weight Throw (Men): Brandon Pless (Sr., Sedro-Woolley, WA) recorded a pair of GNAC-leading performances in placing 5th in the weight throw (16.44m, 53-11 ¼) and 8th in the shot put (16.44m, 3-11 ¼).

The Vikings will return to the University of Washington in two weeks for the UW Invitational, held Jan. 27-28 at Dempsey Indoor.
