SEATTLE, Wash. - The Western Washington University track & field program closed out competition at the two-day UW Invitational on Saturday at Dempsey Indoor Center with WWU competitors in 14 events and two new personal-best entries into the program top 10 indoor record books.
Sophomore middle distance runner Kyler Sager (Snohomish, WA) placed 28th in the 800m with a time of 1:55.02, a personal-best effort ranking 4th among the program all-time indoor top 10 times and 3rd among GNAC times this season.
Junior jumper Somit Chhim (Kelso, WA) also had a personal-best program top 10 performance, placing 14th in the triple jump with a leap of 13.60m (44-7 ½). His mark is 6th among the program indoor top 10 marks and ranks 3rd among top GNAC marks in 2017.
Junior thrower Bryan Lee (Sammamish, WA/Skyline) recorded a GNAC-leading throw of 17.04m (55-11) in the weight throw, placing 6th. Senior thrower Brandon Pless (Sedro-Woolley, WA), the reigning GNAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week, followed in 8th with a mark of 16.58m (54-4 ¾).
Senior distance runner Andrew Wise (Denver, CO/East) placed 42nd in the 3,000m with a time of 8:25.65, just over 2 seconds shy of the NCAA II provisional qualifying time he posted on Jan. 14 at the UW Indoor Preview.
Senior Nate van Tuinen (Yakima, WA/Spokance CC) led four Vikings competing in the long jump with a mark of 6.97m (22-10 ½) to place 5th. The distance is 2nd-best in the GNAC at this point in the season.
During the first day of competition on Friday, senior pole vaulter Gordie Kordas (Blaine, WA) had a provisional qualifying mark by clearing 4.81m (15-9 ¼) in the pole vault and Wise also posted a provisional qualifying effort in the 5,000m with a time of 14:39.59. Junior pole vaulter Anna Paradee (Tacoma, WA/Decatur) equaled her NCAA provisional qualifying performance from the season-opening UW Preview with a height of 3.68m (12-0 ¾) on Friday as well.
For the weekend, the Vikings had 8 new personal-best program top 10 performances.
Next up for WWU is the Cougar Indoor at Washington State University on Feb. 3-4. The meet will be the third of five meets during the indoor season for WWU prior to the GNAC Indoor Championships, hosted by Northwest Nazarene University on Feb. 17-18 in Nampa, Idaho.
