Box Score Oct. 12, 2017

Box Score

BURNABY, BC â€" The No. 3-ranked Western Washington University women's soccer team kept on rolling, this time with a 3-0 road victory over Simon Fraser Thursday evening in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action at Terry Fox Field.
Liv Larson's header goal off a perfectly-placed corner kick from senior Emily Webster in the second minute (1:52) gave the Vikings the only goal they would need to improve to 12-0-0 on the season and 8-0-0 in GNAC play. Of the 12 victories this season, eight have come on the road.
Freshman Darby Doyle (56') and senior Sierra Shugarts (64') would add second half goals to give the defending national champions their 36th consecutive victory dating back to the start of last season.
"It was a great win tonight. We had to make some adjustments tactically at halftime and I am proud of how the team responded," said head coach Travis Connell.
The Vikings recorded their fifth consecutive shutout, and ninth clean sheet of the season, out-shooting the Clan 14-5 in the game and holding a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. WWU has allowed only three goals in the 12 games this season.
In addition to the 36th consecutive victory, the 4th-longest in NCAA Division II history, WWU also extended its unbeaten streak to 37 consecutive games (36-0-1) and is undefeated in its last 60 games vs. GNAC opponents (55-0-6). The unbeaten streak vs. conference opponents, which dates back to 2013, is now tied for the 2nd-longest in the NCAA II record books.
Clinging to a 1-0 halftime lead, the Vikings made some adjustments at the half and expanded the lead to 3-0 with a pair of goals in the 20 minutes of the second half.
Doyle (Spokane, WA/Gonzaga Prep) drilled a 30-yard shot into the top right corner for her third goal of the season. Doyle took a short pass from freshman teammate Zoe Milburn (Maple Valley, WA/Tahoma), before connecting on the long distance shot for her second goal in as many games.
"Darby keeps gaining confidence with each match she plays, and showed her ability on that shot," said Connell on his freshman midfielder.
Shugarts (Federal Way, WA/Decatur) scored less than eight minutes later off a corner kick from senior Malia Maack (Spokane, WA/Mead). The goal was the first of the season, and fifth of her career, for the senior captain who was the 2016 NCAA II National Player of the Year.
"We take tons and tons of reps on set pieces, and some games it is critical, like it was tonight," added Connell, whose team has scored three goals off corner kicks in the last two games. "If we can score on set pieces like we have been, it makes us even more dangerous."
Senior goalkeeper Ashley Homer (Puyallup, WA) continued her dominating run in the net, making 4 saves before exiting the game in the 71st minute. Homer has now not allowed a goal in her last 839:40 minutes in net. Sophomore Callie VanAelst (Mill Creek, WA/Jackson) made her collegiate debut manning goal for the final 20 minutes of the game.
Simon Fraser goalie Priya Sandhu made three saves for the Clan, who fall 5-7-0 overall and 3-5-0 in GNAC play.
The Vikings return to action next Thursday traveling to face rival Seattle Pacific at 7 pm at Interbay Soccer Stadium. WWU beat the Falcons 1-0 on Oct. 5 in Bellingham and is undefeated (11-0-3) in its last 14 games vs. SPU (won 7 straight).
