HURRICANE, Utah - Western Washington University junior Stephanie Sewell turned in another solid round, this time with a 3-over-par 75, to finish in a tie for 7th place at the Dixie State Women's Golf Invitational played Monday and Tuesday at Sand Hollow Golf Course. As a team, WWU placed 6th in the 10-team tournament. Sewell (Kent, WA/Kentridge) backed up her first round 78 (+6) with Tuesday's 3-over-par round to finish at 9-over-par 153 for the 36-hole tournament. Sewell played the par 5 holes during the tournament at 2-under-par, tied for the 5th-best among tournament players.
"I thought Stephanie had a solid tournament and really struck the ball well," said head coach Bo Stephan. "I am proud of how she played and competed in the tournament." The Vikings moved up one spot during the final round, finishing in 6th place in the 10-team field. Western improved four strikes from Monday's round, firing a team score of 318 (+30) on the par 72 layout.
"Today was step in the right direction and we improved a little each day," added Stephan. "We are still not quite where we need to be, but we will work on things and look forward to hosting our tournament next week."
Freshman Katelann Soth (Bonney Lake, WA/Kentwood) finished just outside of the top 20 at 15-over-par (159) for the tournament, placing 23rd. Soth shot a 7-over-par 79 in Tuesday's final round, to go with her 8-over-par 80 on Monday. Soth recorded 25 pars during the tournament, tied for 2nd-best in the 56-player field. Junior Hannah Drake (Pocatello, ID/Century) moved up several spots to finish in a tie for 31st place at +20 (164), carding a 8-over-par 80 in the final round. Freshman Megan Billeter (Spokane, WA/Mt. Spokane) finished in a tie for 35th (+21) and junior Annie Leete (Oak Harbor, WA/Eastern Washington) rounded out the Vikings lineup in 43rd place (+24). Tournament host Dixie State (+34, 610) won the team title with a one-stroke victory over Cal State Monterey Bay. Sonoma State's Sabrina Virtusio claimed individual medalist honors with a 3-stroke victory over the field finishing at even-par 144.
WWU returns to action next Monday and Tuesday hosting its annual home tournament (Oct. 9-10) at Bellingham Golf & Country Club.
