NAMPA, Idaho - Senior Nate van Tuinen and freshman Macie Allen each set school records for Western Washington University to highlight the first day of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted at Jacksons Indoor Track at the Idaho Center on Friday.
The WWU men are in 4th after the first day of competition with 29 points while the WWU women are in 8th with 10 points.
van Tuinen (Yakima, WA/Spokane CC) placed 4th in the long jump with a leap of 7.21m (23-8) to top the previous school record held by Brett Watson at 7.19 (23-7 ¼). van Tuinen improved upon his previous personal best of 7.17m (23-6 ¼) set in 2015. His effort is an NCAA II provisional qualifying mark.
Allen (Gresham, OR/Barlow) placed 4th in the preliminaries of the 60m with a time of 7.77, bettering her previous personal best of 7.99 to set the WWU indoor school record. Tanya Bjornsson held the previous indoor record with a time of 7.84 in 2013. Allen advanced to the 60m finals on Saturday.
Freshman hurdler Cordell Cummings (Arlington, WA) qualified for the finals in the 60m hurdles, placing 7th in the preliminaries with a time of 8.55. His time ranks 9th among the all-time indoor top 10 list at WWU.
Sophomore middle distance runner Kyler Sager (Snohomish, WA) advanced to the finals of the 800m with a personal-best time of 1:54.96, placing 4th in the preliminaries. His time is 4th on the indoor top 10 list at WWU. Sophomore Keaton Spiller (Vancouver, WA/Heritage) placed 7th in the preliminaries of the 800m with a personal-best time of 1:55.53 to rank 8th in WWU history.
Freshman distance runner Peter Butler (Port Angeles, WA) led three Vikings in the 5,000m with a time of 15:07.87 to place 4th. Senior Brandon Pless (Sedro-Woolley, WA) and junior Bryan Lee (Sammamish, WA/Skyline) were also scoring placers in the weight throw, with Pless placing 3rd (16.90m, 55-5 ½) and Lee 4th (16.82m, 55-2 ½).
Sophomore pole vaulter Adam Thomas (Washougal, WA) led three scoring placers for WWU in the pole vault with a height of 4.37m (14-4) to place 5th.
The men's distance medley relay team of freshman Colton Hoggarth (Yakima, WA/West Valley), freshman Dario Ciclincione (Renton, WA/Hazon), Spiller and junior Logan Giese (Spokane, WA/Central Valley) placed 7th in a time of 10:37.96.
Freshman distance runner Sophia Galvez (Los Alamos, NM) had a 5th-place finish in the 5,000m with a time of 18:26.87 to rank 9th in WWU top 10 history. Junior distance runner Lillianna Stelling (Langley, WA/South Whidbey) was also a scoring placer in the 5,000m, finishing 7th in a time of 18:33.01.
The women's distance medley relay team of freshman Aundrea Koger (Osage City, KS), junior Deja Svastisalee (Spokane, WA/North Central), freshman Waverly Shreffler (Sequim, WA) and junior Maddy Hutchison (Snoqualmie, WA/Mount Si) finished 5th with a time of 12:40.21 to post the 10th-fastest time in program history.
The meet resumes Saturday with the heptathlon at 8:30 am PT before the field events start at 9 am PT and the running events at 10:25 am PT.
