March 20, 2017 First Round Results 
SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Western Washington University women's golf team is tied for 9th place after the first round of the Otter Invitational played Monday at Bayonet Golf Course.
The two-day, 36-hole tournament is hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay. WWU is tied for 9th with Chico State in the 18-team field. The field is bunched together tightly with only seven strokes separating third place from WWU in 9th place.
The Vikings recorded a 31-over-par 319 over the first 18 holes, carding 49 pars and 4 birdies on the par 72, 5,980-yard layout.
"This is a tough golf course and it took us a while to start making any birdies," said head coach Bo Stephan. "This is the kind of course where a good final round could make a big move."
Senior Brooke Branigan (Bellingham, WA) is tied for 18th place in the 99-player field, firing a 6-over-par 78. Sophomore Hannah Drake (Pocatello, ID/Century) is tied for 29th carding a 7-over-par 79 in the first round.
Dallas Baptist holds an 8-stroke lead over the 18-team field, with a first-round score of 10-over-par 298. Five players are tied for individual medalist honors after carding rounds of 1-over-par 73.
The tournament concludes Tuesday with the final round beginning with an 8:30 am shotgun start.
