SEATTLE, Wash. - Senior Brittany Grant and junior Brandon Pless each recorded personal-best NCAA II provisional performances as the Western Washington University track & field program competed at the Doris Heritage Distance Festival on Saturday, hosted by Seattle Pacific University at West Seattle Stadium.
Grant (Distance, Port Townsend, WA) placed 4th of 22 in the 1,500m to lead four WWJU competitors in the race with a provisional-qualifying time of 4:33.29. She was the top NCAA Division II placer in the race and her time ranks 6th in WWU top 10 history as well as 8th nationally during the season.
Pless (Throws, Sedro-Woolley, WA) posted an outdoor personal-best and provisional-qualifying effort in the shot put, placing 2nd with a mark of 15.99m (52-5 ½). His performance ranks 5th on the WWU top 10 list as well as 10th on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference top 10 list.
Junior Isaac Derline (Distance, Kent, WA/Kentridge) won the 5,000m with a time of 14:50.17. WWU had the top three finishers as sophomore Dylan Hayes (Middle Distance, Seattle, WA/Garfield) followed in 2nd (15:24.45) and junior Nickolas Mounier (Middle Distance, Kelso, WA) in 3rd (15:42.22).
Junior Adam Thomas (Pole Vault, Washougal, WA) led a 1-2-3 finish for WWU in the men's pole vault, clearing 4.55m (14-11) to win the event. He was followed by senior Gordie Kordas (Pole Vault, Blaine, WA) in 2nd (4.40m/14-5 ¼) and senior Jacob Hino (Pole Vault, Yakima, WA/Eisenhower) in 3rd (4.25m/13-11 ¼).
Sophomore Anna Paradee (Pole Vault, Tacoma, WA/Decatur) placed 2nd in the pole vault to lead four Vikings in the event with a height of 3.65m (11-11 ¾). Although it was a provisional-qualifying height, it did not better her personal-best mark of 3.75m (12-3 ½) set last weekend at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open. Her personal-best mark is 3rd in WWU history and ranks tied for 5th nationally as a provisional-qualifying height.
Sophomore Rachael Roberts (Pole Vault, Woodinville, WA/Bellevue College) placed 3rd in the pole vault on Saturday with a personal-best height of 3.50m (11-5 ¾) to rank in a tie for 7th in WWU top 10 history.
Overall, the Vikings recorded 19 top-3 finishes at the meet. Sophomore Savannah Smith (Sprints, Renton, WA) in the 400m (58.70), senior Miranda Osadchey (Jumps, Dupont, WA/Steilacoom) in the long jump (5.22m/17-1 ½) and sophomore Bridget Henry (Jumps, Bellingham, WA/Sehome) in the high jump (1.54m/5-0 ½) each placed 2nd in their respective events. On the men's side, Pless was also 2nd in the hammer with a distance of 52.94m (173-8).
Freshman Sophia Galvez (Distance, Los Alamos, NM) was the top female placer in the mixed 10,000m with a time of 38:27.78.
The Vikings will compete at three locations next week. WWU is scheduled to compete at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival (March 31-April 1), Stanford Invitational (March 31-April 1) and UPS Shotwell Invitational (April 1).
