VALLEJO, Calif. - The Western Washington University women's golf team is tied for 5th place after the first round of the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout played Monday at Hiddenbrooke Golf Course. The 36-hole tournament is hosted by Cal State East Bay.
The Vikings are at 28-over-par after the first-round total of 316, tied with Chico State for 5th place. California Baptist leads the 14-team field after firing a 7-ove-rpar 295 to hold an 8-stroke advantage over the field.
Looking to defend individual medalist honors at the Pioneer Shootout, junior Jenn Paul (Bellingham, WA) fired a 2-over-par 74 in the first round to stand in 5th place in the 77-player field. Paul, a two-time GNAC co-Golfer of the Year selection, took home medalist honors in the same tournament last year finishing at 1-under-par for the tournament. Paul's 2-over-par round on Monday featured two birdies, four bogeys and 12 pars.
Sophomore Hannah Drake (Pocatello, ID/Century) is tied for 10th after shooting a 4-over-par 76.
"It was a strange round and a hard day to summarize," said head coach Bo Stephan. "We had some uncharacteristic high scores on a few holes that really hurt us, but other than that, I thought we had some positive results today. The course is very tough. We'll look to make some adjustments tomorrow and hopefully make up some ground."
The tournament concludes Tuesday with the final 18 holes featuring a shotgun start at 7:30 am.
