SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Senior Bethany Drake improved her NCAA II provisional-qualifying mark in winning the javelin while junior Brandon Pless produced a personal-best in winning the shot put at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival to highlight a busy Saturday for the Western Washington University track & field program with student-athletes competing at three locations.
The Vikings also competed at the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, Calif., on Saturday while a majority of the team was in action at the University of Puget Sound Shotwell Invitational in Tacoma, Wash. With team scoring at UPS, the WWU men finished 2nd while the women were 3rd.
Drake (Throws, Sandy, OR) won the javelin with a throw of 47.62m (156-3) in San Francisco to improve upon her mark of 46.30m (151-11) from her season debut on Friday at Stanford. She placed 1st of 23 with a GNAC-leading distance that is among the top marks nationally during the 2017 season.
Pless (Throws, Sedro-Woolley, WA) won the shot put with a mark of 16.15m (53-0) to finish 1st of 20. His effort ranks No. 3 in WWU history as well as No. 7 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference history. The performance on Saturday bettered his previous personal-best of 15.99m (52-5 ½) set earlier this season and is a top 20 national mark.
Senior Mark Seely (Jumps, Spokane, WA/Central Valley) had a 7th-place finish with a season-best leap of 14.18m (46-6 ¼) in the triple jump as four WWU student-athletes competed at Stanford on Saturday.
The WWU men totaled 101 points at the Shotwell Invitational, placing 2nd of 14 behind Spokane CC (109 points). The Viking women finished with 86.50 points to place 3rd of 14 behind Central Washington (127) and Spokane CC (89.50). The Vikings recorded 18 top-3 event finishes on Saturday at UPS, with 10 for the men and eight for the women.
Senior Ryan McArthur (Middle Distance, Lynwood, WA) won the 400m, placing 1st of 18 in a time of 49.40 while freshman Cordell Cummings (Hurdles, Arlington, WA) also claimed an event victory in the 400m hurdles (55.49). Sophomore Dylan Hayes (Middle Distance, Seattle, WA/Garfield) added a 1st-place finish in the 3,000m steeplechase for WWU with a time of 9:27.86.
Freshman Alex Taylor (Sprints, Federal Way, WA) tied for 2nd of 30 in the 100m with a time of 11.16 while freshman Nicholas Makrakis (Jumps, Concord, CA/Northgate) was 2nd in the triple jump with a leap of 12.58m (41-3 ¼). Senior Sean Eustis (Distance, Washougal, WA) took 2nd in the 5,000m with a time of 15:24.76 and sophomore Peter Butler (Distance, Port Angeles, WA) followed in 3rd place (15:28.26).
Senior Lillianna Stelling (Distance, Langley, WA/South Whidbey) led a 1-2-3 finish for the Vikings in the 5,000m with a time of 17:31.90. She was followed by freshman Peyton Shinnick (Distance, Maple Valley, WA/Tahoma) in 2nd (17:57.37) and junior Alexandra Laiblin (Distance, Oak Harbor, WA) in 3rd (18:18.66).
Freshman Macie Allen (Sprints, Gresham, OR/Barlow) was 3rd of 30 in the 100m with a time of 12.57 and freshman Kelsey McLean (Sprints, Kirkland, WA/Juanita) took 4th in 12.64. Sophomore Emily Sytsma (Sprints, Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian) added a 2nd-place finish in the 400m with a time of 58.86 while senior Shawna Troupe (Middle Distance, Kelso, WA) finished 2nd in the 1,500m with a time of 4:52.65.
Next up for the Vikings is the Emilie Mondor Invitational at Simon Fraser on Saturday, April 8.
