Aug. 29, 2017 BELLINGHAM, Wash. - A total of 42 Western Washington University student-athletes were recognized by the Division II Athletics Directors Association (D2ADA) as Academic Achievement Award winners, announced Monday.
The Academic Achievement Award is a program that recognizes the academic accomplishments of student-athletes at the Division II level. To qualify for the award student-athletes must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher on a 4.0 scale, have attended a minimum of two years of college level work and have been an active member of an intercollegiate team during his/her last academic year. The athletics director of the Division II institution must be a current dues-paying member of the D2ADA.
In total, a record 10,644 student-athletes from 183 institutions are being recognized for the 2016-17 Academic Achievement Awards, including 318 from seven schools in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
The 42 Academic Achievement Award winners add to the impressive list of academic and athletic accolades for WWU student-athletes from the 2016-17 season. A total of 73 Western student-athletes were named to GNAC All-Academic teams in their respective sports and 23 received all-region academic awards. WWU's 15 intercollegiate athletic programs, comprised of over 300 student-athletes, combined for a 3.16 GPA.
