HURRICANE, Utah – The Western Washington University women's golf team is in 5^th place after the first round of the Dixie State Fall Invitational played Monday at Sand Hollow Golf Course.
 
WWU carded a 17-over-par team score of 305, with four of five scoring players firing rounds in the 70s. The Vikings are six strokes back of 4^th-place Dixie State and eight shots back of 3^rd-place Westminster College. Academy of Art leads the 10-team field at 5-over-par 293, with Cal State East Bay in 2^nd place at +7 (295).  
 
"I thought out scoring was pretty good today, and we were close to having a really good round, we just slid a little near the end," said head coach Bo Stephan. "Overall, it is still a solid round and I think we can make up some ground tomorrow. We will clean some things up and get after it for the final round on Tuesday."
 
Junior Lacy Sheldon (Dallas, TX/Legacy Christian/Montevallo) leads the Viking contingent in a tie for 10^th place after turning in a 2-over-par 74 in the opening round. The GNAC Women's Golfer of the Week was consistent with 14 pars, one birdie and two bogeys in her round.
 
Senior Annie Leete (Oak Harbor, WA) is tied for 14^th in the 60-player field at 4-over-par 76. Leete recorded the second-lowest round as a Viking, carding four birdies on the par 72, 6,388-yard layout.
 
Senior Nicole Miller (Renton, WA/Kennedy Catholic/North Idaho College) is also in the top 20 in a tie for 17^th place at 5-over-par 77.
 
Here is a look at WWU's scores and the team standings through the first round of the tournament. The second round, weather permitting, is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at 8 am MT.

The Vikings host the WWU Invitational next week (Oct. 8-9) at Bellingham Golf & Country Club. The fall season concludes Oct. 29-30 at the Cal State San Marcos Fall Classic at Woods Valley Golf Course in Valley Center, California.
