Vikings Open Preseason With 89-55 Victory

WWU defeats Trinity Western in exhibition contest

BELLINGHAM, Wash – Western Washington University junior guard Dani Iwami scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Vikings to an 89-55 exhibition victory over Trinity Western University Monday night on WECU Court in Carver Gym.
 
The result and statistics from the game do not count towards the official 2018-19 record, with the regular season opening Nov. 9-10 with WWU hosting the West Region Crossover Classic in Carver Gym.
 
Iwami (Seal Beach, CA/Los Alamitos/Hawai'i Pacific) was 10-for-16 from the field and went 4-for-6 from 3-point range to lead three Vikings in double-figure scoring.
 
Junior center Anna Schwecke (Evergreen, CO/Clear Creek/Colorado-Colorado Springs) added 16 points on 7-for-10 shooting and grabbed 4 rebounds.
 
Freshman guard Avery Dykstra (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian) added 12 points on 3-for-6 shooting, going 2-for-5 from beyond the arc and 4-for-6 from the free throw line.
 
All 10 Vikings that played scored at least 3 points. Sophomore guard Emma Duff (Tumwater, WA/Black Hills) recorded a team-high 7 rebounds and junior guard Lexie Bland (Ellensburg, WA) dished out 4 assists and had 5 steals.
 
The Vikings and Spartans were tied after the first quarter, with Iwami leading all scorers with 8 points on 3-for-4 shooting.
 
TWU opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 24-19 lead, but the Vikings answered with a 16-0 run over the final 6:37 to take a 35-24 lead into halftime. Schwecke, Bland and Iwami scored 4 points apiece during the 16-0 run, with the defense holding the Spartans to 0-for-5 shooting.
 
WWU out-scored TWU 70-31 from the 6:37 mark in the second quarter through the end of the game. Overall the Vikings shot 45.7% from the field (32-for-70) and were 9-for-25 (36.0%) from 3-point range.
 
Trinity Western was led by 14 points and 9 rebounds from senior forward Tessa Ratzlaff. Freshman guard Nicole Fransson added 13 points on 6-for-9 shooting in 19 minutes of action.
 
WWU will next be in action with the season-opening West Region Crossover Nov. 9-10 in Carver Gym. WWU will open the season facing Humboldt State on Nov. 9 at 7:30 pm, immediately following the Seattle Pacific vs. Fresno Pacific game that is set to start at 5 pm on WECU Court.

Viking Madness
WWU will host Viking Madness this Friday (Oct. 26) from 7-9 pm in Carver Gym. The event formerly known as Viking Jam is a fun, free vent where the men's and women's basketball teams will celebrate the beginning of another Viking basketball season. Fun events include trick-or-treating, a Halloween costume contest and chances to win great prices. Viking Madness also provides an opportunity for WWU students, fans and community members to meet the players, get autographs on official team posters and see both teams scrimmage on the court. There will also be a 3-point shooting contest and slam dunk contest. The WWU cheerleading squad, the Viking Band and the WWU Hip Hop Dance Team will also be in action to provide a fun night in Carver Gym. The pre-event starts at 7 pm with the main event starting at 8 pm.
 
About WWU Basketball
One of the premier basketball programs in NCAA Division II, recording a 20-win season in seven of the last nine seasons, and 34 times in the 47-year history of the program.
