VALLEY CENTER , Calif. – The Western Washington University women's golf team is in 8th place after the first round of the 2018 Cal State San Marcos Fall Classic played Monday at Woods Valley Golf Club.
The Vikings fired a team score of 30-over-par 318 and head into Tuesday's final round 33 strokes back of tournament leader and host, Cal State San Marcos (-3, 285). Simon Fraser University (+18, 306) is 21 strokes back of CSUSM in 2
nd place in the 12-team field, with Point Loma (+19, 307) close behind in 3
rd place.
WWU senior
Nicole Miller (Renton, WA/Kennedy Catholic/North Idaho College) led the Vikings with a 4-over-par 76 to tie for 13
th-place individually. Miller is 11 strokes behind tournament co-leaders Jamie Jacob and Bergen Benedict of CSU San Marcos (-3, 69).
After stumbling on her second hole, Miller turned it around to finish the rest of the round at 2-over-par. Miller is tied for second in the tournament for number of pars (13).
Miller is followed by junior
Lacy Sheldon (Dallas, TX/Legacy Christian/Montevallo) and senior
Annie Leete (Oak Harbor, WA), both tied for 34
th in the 66-player field at 8-over-par (80).
Rounding out the WWU contingent in the first round of play was junior
Brianna Esvelt (Kennewick, WA/Kamiakin/Columbia Basin College) at 10-over-par 82 (tied for 41
st) and senior
Hannah Drake (Pocatello, ID/Century) at 11-over-par 83 (tied for 45
th).
Tuesday's second round is scheduled to begin with an 8 am shotgun start, with live scoring available at
Golfstat.com.
