GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Western Washington University women's golf team opened the 2018-19 season with a third-place finish at the WNMU Fall Intercollegiate played Monday and Tuesday at the Golf Club of Estrella.

Western completed the 36-hole tournament at 20-over-par 596, finishing in third place out of 18 teams. Cal State San Marcos led wire-to-wire to win the tournament finishing at 1-under-par 575 and Arkansas Tech was second at 6-over-par 582.

"I was proud of how the team recovered during the middle of the round, after a tough start, and they didn't let the day get away from them. That's a real positive this early in the season and it led to a great team finish in the tournament," said head coach Bo Stephan. "The overall feeling this team has is really positive and there is a lot of confidence. We turned the page from last season and started on a very positive note. We'll take that into our practice rounds and our next event. There are quality players on this team."

Junior transfer Lacy Sheldon (Dallas, TX/Legacy Christian/Montevallo) tied for third place in the 97-player field, completing the tournament with a 1-under-par score of 143. Sheldon fired a 1-under-par 71 in Monday's first round and finished the tournament with an even-par 72 on Tuesday.

Senior Nicole Miller (Renton, WA/Kennedy Catholic/North Idaho College) also cracked the top 20 finishing in a tie for 18th place at 4-over-par 148. Miller carded rounds of 73 (+1) and 75 (+3) in the season-opening tournament.

Junior college transfer Briana Esvelt (Kennewick, WA/Kamiakin/Columbia Basin College) moved up from 41st to a tie for 23rd place with a 1-over-par round of 73 in the final round.

Cal State San Marcos had the top two individuals in the tournament placing ahead of Sheldon, with Sarah Garcia winning with a 4-under-par 140 and Jamie Jacob placing second at 2-under-par 142.
