Vikings Throttle Langara 90-51 in Final Tuneup Before Opening GNAC Play on Tuesday

All 10 Vikings that suited up scored in the 39-point victory

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's basketball team received a balanced team effort with 10 different players scoring points in a decisive 90-51 victory over Langara College Saturday night to close out play in the 2019 Chuck Randall Classic.

 

The Vikings shot 49.3% from the field connecting on 33-of-67 shots, including 14-for-29 from 3-point range, to improve to 4-3 on the season. Redshirt freshman point guard D'Angelo Minnis had a solid weekend in Carver Gym finishing with 17 points on Saturday and earned tournament MVP honors averaging 19.0 points, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals in the two-game tournament.

 

Junior forward Luke Lovelady added a 14-point 7-rebound performance in a starting role vs. the Falcons, connecting on 6-of-9 shots. Lovelady was also selected to the all-tournament team averaging 14.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game in the tournament.

 

Sophomore guard/forward Jalen Green added 14 points and a career-high 4 blocked shots to round out WWU's double-digit scorers. All told, six players scored at least eight points in the game and all 10 players that dressed scored at least three points. 

 

"We have had a very difficult schedule to this point, and battled through some tough injuries, so it was nice to have a successful weekend for sure leading into GNAC play," said WWU head coach Tony Dominguez. "The ball movement was good tonight and that is something we have been working on…getting everyone involved. I thought we accomplished that tonight, and reached some of our benchmarks of 20+ assists and 10 or less turnovers."

 

Langara, a Canadian college in Vancouver, BC, was led by all-tournament selection Luka Lizdek who totaled 12 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists while playing all 40 minutes in the game. Athaya Moeiz scored a game-high 18 points on 7-for-18 shooting and tallied the double-double with 10 rebounds. 

 

GAME NOTES

Trevor Jasinsky made his 160th career 3-pointer to move into the top 30 all-time in Great Northwest Athletic Conference history…Jalen Green recorded a career-high 4 blocked shots…freshman walk-on Ivan Bullock from Orcas Island made his collegiate debut and hit a 3-pointer in the final minute of the game…WWU led wire-to-wire in the game…the Vikings out-scored the Falcons 36-16 in the paint and held a 44-31 advantage in rebounds…WWU turned 19 Langara turnovers into 21 points…the win was No. 1,498 in program history, drawing close to the 1,500 milestone…WWU had a 24-10 assist-to-turnover ratio.

 

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

The Vikings took a 16-point lead into halftime with a 38-22 advantage over Langara. D'Angelo Minnis led the Vikings with 12 points on 4-for-8 shooting while playing 17 of the 20 minutes and Leif Anderson was 3-for-5 from 3-point range for 9 points. WWU led by as many as 16 points at 27-11 with 7:36 remaining in the half.

 

UP NEXT

WWU (4-3) faces a quick turnaround with a Tuesday game at Simon Fraser at 7:30 pm to open the Great Northwest Athletic Conference season. The game is part of a GNAC opening doubleheader with both WWU basketball teams playing at Simon Fraser, with the women tipping off at 5:15 pm in West Gym. The game can be followed via live webcast at GNAC.tv.

 

"We are on the road in two days, so it's tough, but we'll practice tomorrow and Monday and get after it on Tuesday," added Dominguez. "SFU is off to a hot start and they are a very good team, so we need to be prepared, but I think our guys are ready for conference play."

 

SIMON FRASER 89, COLORADO CHRISTIAN 80

Simon Fraser University defeated Colorado Christian University 89-80 in the first game on Saturday, pulling away from the Cougars late to win its fifth consecutive game. CCU challenged SFU pulling to within one point twice, last at 74-73 with 4:28 remaining. 

 

Sophomore guard Wilfried Balata led the Clan with a 27-point, 10-rebound double-double, inching towards triple-double territory with 6 assists. Forward Jasdeep Singh added 22 points and 9 rebounds and Julian Roche had 21 points, 12 rebounds and 2 steals. Senior guard Othniel Spence rounded out SFU's scoring leaders with 16 points in 24 minutes.

 

Colorado Christian had four players reach double-figures in scoring, led by 20 points from guard Collin Hunn on 7-for-11 shooting, with 6-for-7 accuracy from 3-point range. Guard Jake Hornick also neared a triple-double with 10 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds. CCU shot 58.2% for the game (32-for-55) including 13-for-23 from beyond the arc (56.5%).

 

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

Here is the six-member Chuck Randall Classic All-Tournament Team as decided on by statistical performances during the two-day, four-game tournament featuring host Western Washington, Simon Fraser, Colorado Christian and Langara College:

  • D'Angelo Minnis (WWU) – Tournament MVP – 19.0 ppg, 4.0 apg, 2.5 rpg, 3.0 spg, 14-for-23 FG
  • Luke Lovelady (WWU) – 14.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 13-for-19 FG (68.4%)
  • Jasdeep Singh (SFU) – 20.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 4.5 apg, 17-for-28 FG (60.7%)
  • Wilfried Balata (SFU) – 20.0 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 4.0 apg
  • Luka Lizdek (LAN) – 14.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.5 apg
  • Jake Hornick (CCU) – 14.5 ppg, 6.5 apg, 5.0 rpg 

THE CHUCK RANDALL CLASSIC

The tournament is named after the legendary former WWU coach and basketball pioneer Chuck Randall, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 89. Randall, who coached the Vikings for 18 seasons from 1963 to 1981 and posted a record of 275-186, was named the WWU men's Coach of the Century for 1900 to 1999. He received hall of fame honors from Central Valley High School, National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, Western and Eastern Washington University.
