SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Western Washington University women's golf team opened the spring season with a 9th-place finish at the Sea Lion Invitational hosted by Point Loma Nazarene University.

The scheduled 36-hole tournament was shortened to one round (18 holes) due to rain in the San Diego area and conditions on the par 72 Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Course.

WWU recorded a team score of 43-over-par 331, with sophomore Megan Billeter (Spokane, WA/Mt. Spokane) leading the way tying for 20th place with an 8-over-par 80.

Junior Brianna Esvelt (Kennewick, WA/Kamiakin/Columbia Basin College) finished 24th at 9-over-par (81) and senior Annie Leete (Oak Harbor, WA) tied for 38th at 12-over-par 84. Senior Hannah Drake (Pocatello, ID/Century) shot a 14-over-par 86 to tie for 52nd and junior Lacy Sheldon (Dallas, TX/Legacy Christian/Montevallo) tied for 58th with a 15-over-par 87.

"It was definitely a tournament that tested us in all aspects – weather, course conditions and mental toughness," said head coach Luke Bennett. "The ability is there, it just didn't happen for us this round."

No. 14 nationally-ranked Cal State San Marcos took home top team honors with a 15-over-par team round of 303. Victoria (BC) placed 2nd at +28 (316), one stroke better than tournament host Point Loma (+29, 317).

Point Loma's Alli Kim and San Marcos' Bergen Benedict tied for the lowest round at 2-over-par 74.
