ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Western Washington University women's golf team is tied for fourth place out of 19 teams through the first round of the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout hosted by Cal State East Bay.

 

The Vikings shot a team score of 21-over-par 309 on the Par 72 Corica Park South Course. WWU is tied in 4thplace with Cal State Monterey Bay and George Fox, with the three teams two strokes back of 3rd-place Sonoma State. 

 

WWU recorded 10 birdies in the opening round, second-most in the 19-team field behind Sonoma State's 12.

 

"I was pleased with how we played today," said WWU head coach Luke Bennett. "A few players battled early nerves, but settled in nicely."

 

Junior Brianna Esvelt (Kennewick, WA/Kamiakin/Lower Columbia College) led the Vikings five-player contingent in a tie for 6th place after carding an opening round 2-over-par 74.

 

Freshman Sarah Shea (Sequim, WA) made her second collegiate start and her first away from Bellingham a memorable one, firing a 5-over-par 77 to sit in a tie for 18th place.

 

"I was thrilled with how Brianna and Sarah played today," added Bennett. "Brianna was rock-solid from beginning to end in her round."

 

Sophomore Megan Billeter (Spokane, WA/Mt. Spokane) is tied for 27th at 6-over-par (78). Junior Lacy Sheldon (Dallas, TX/Legacy Christian/Montevallo) is tied for 44th at +8 (80) and senior Hannah Drake (Pocatello, ID/Century) is tied for 63rd at +11 (83).

 

"As a team we look to build off this round as we head into tomorrow's final round," said Bennett.

 

Cal State San Marcos leads the tournament at 8-over-par 296, followed closely by Academy of Art at 10-over-par 298.

 

Claire Hogle of Cal State San Marcos and Megan Daleo of Sonoma State are tied for individual medalist honors heading into the final round after shooting a 2-under-par 70 on Monday.

 

The tournament concludes Tuesday with teams starting at 8:45 am with a shotgun start. Results can be tracked online via BirdieFire.com. WWU will tee off holes 4 (Esvelt), 5 (Shea and Billeter) and 6 (Sheldon and Drake.
