GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Western Washington University women's golf team is tied for 10th place out of 23 teams after the first round of the Mustang Intercollegiate played Friday at Palm Valley Golf Club.

Freshman Sarah Shea carded a career-low round of 2-over-par 74 lead the Vikings, heading into Tuesday's final round tied for 16th place in the 113-player field.

The Vikings recorded a team score of 19-over-par 307 in Friday's first round, sitting eight shots back of the top six teams in the tournament. Colorado State-Pueblo leads the tournament at 4-over-par 292, followed by West Texas A&M and Academy of Art at 8-over-par 296. The two-day, 36-hole tournament is hosted by Western New Mexico University and is played on the 6,005-yard, par 72 layout.

"I am pleased with the day, it would have been nice to finish our last hole a little better but all in all I loved the effort from each of them today," said head coach Luke Bennett. "Sarah was rocking and rolling from start to finish. I am looking forward to a great final round from the team tomorrow."

Shea was steady in her third tournament appearance of the season, recording 14 pars, one birdie and three bogeys in her round.

Junior Lacy Sheldon is tied for 31st place at 4-over-par 76 and sophomore Katelann Soth is tied for 40th after shooting a 5-over-par 77 in her 2018-19 season debut.

Anahi Servin (Academy of Art), Alexis Marshal (Cal State Monterey Bay) and Abigail Rigsby (Oklahoma Christian) are tied atop the leaderboard for individual medalist honors at 2-under-par 70.

The tournament concludes with Saturday's final round. WWU will begin teeing off at 7:30 am on the first hole. Results can be tracked online via Golfstat.com Live Leaderboard.
