BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University head men's basketball coach
Tony Dominguez has announced that guard
Sean Kirk out of Mountlake Terrace High School and Edmonds Community College has joined the program and will begin playing for the Vikings beginning in 2019-20.
Kirk, listed as a 6-3 guard, will be a sophomore in eligibility when he steps on the hardwood in Bellingham, after starting as a freshman in 2018-19 at Edmonds Community College. Kirk was named the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) North Region Freshman of the Year and was the only freshman named to the All-North Region First Team.
In 27 games for Edmonds CC, Kirk averaged 18.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. He shot 49.6% from the field (177-for-357) and scored in double-digits in 24 of 27 games while helping lead the Tritons to a 19-10 record. He also recorded nine double-doubles (points-rebounds). Amongst NWAC leaders in the 36-school league, he ranked 16
th in scoring average (18.3), 20
th in rebounds per game (7.7) and 25
th in free throw percentage (79.9/123-for-154).
"We are excited to have Sean join our program. He is a very driven young man with high character to also go along with his abilities on the court," said
Dominguez. "Sean has a great combination of strength and athleticism to compliment his offensive skill set. He is also a tough defender and is very gritty."
During his prep career at Mountlake Terrace, Kirk was a Second Team WIBCA All-State (2A) selection and a Second Team All-WESCO pick during his senior season in 2016-17. He averaged 17 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals per game as a senior and was selected to play in the 2017 WIBCA 1A vs. 2A All-State Game. He started his high school career at Shorewood High School and attended the University of Washington as a student following his graduation from Mountlake Terrace.
"Overall, we believe Sean is a very complete player that has collegiate experience to add to our program, which we believe will translate into strong leadership characteristics for our team," added Dominguez. "Sean is a Great addition to our basketball family."
Kirk is the third signee that has been added to the WWU men's basketball program for the upcoming 2019-20 season, joining 6-5 combo guard
Christian Zamora out of Lynden High School and 6-5 guard/forward
Bryce Knox out of Mt. San Antonio College. The Vikings return a large majority of their roster with only one senior on the 2018-19 team. All-GNAC first-team selection
Trevor Jasinsky returns for his senior season with over 1,000 career points, and starters
Siaan Rojas (out with injury last season) and 7-foot center
Logan Schilder (redshirted last season) also return to the court.
