Men's Hoops Welcomes Erwin Weary Jr. To Program

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University head men's basketball coach Tony Dominguez has announced that guard Erwin Weary Jr. has joined the program as part of the incoming recruiting class that will debut in 2019-20 for the Vikings.

Weary Jr. will be a sophomore for the Vikings after transferring from Edmonds Community College. The Lynnwood native had a standout prep career at Cedar Park Christian of Mountlake Terrace where he was selected as the Washington 1B State Player of the Year following his senior season in 2017-18.

"We are excited for our latest addition to the Viking Family. Erwin is an outstanding young and very athletic player that has strong high school accomplishments to go along with a successful first year at Edmonds CC," said Dominguez, who is 148-66 (.692) in his seven years as WWU's head coach. "Erwin has a strong desire to be excellent on and off the court and his passion for the game will push him to be a strong player."

In one year at Edmonds CC in 2018-19, the 6-5 guard played in 29 games (3 starts) and averaged 9.7 points per game while playing just over 16 minutes per contest. He scored in double-digits in 14 games, including a season-high 26 points on 11-for 16 shooting in 21 minutes vs. Centralia College on Dec. 9, 2018.

During his senior season at Cedar Park Christian – Mountlake Terrace, Weary averaged 25.6 points, 10.1 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game while leading the Lions to a 27-4 record and the 1B state quarterfinals. He earned 1B Player of the Year honors by both the Associated Press and the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association.

"He is a hard worker and has great offensive instincts to go with his long athletic frame that creates good solid defense," added Dominguez. "He has a complimentary style of play, and determination, with the other additions to our program in the off season. Erwin also possesses tremendous potential to play multiple positions and this versatility combined with his excitement for WWU makes him an attractive addition to our program. We are thrilled to bring another young talented player into the program to prepare for our future with six seniors departing after the 2019-20 season."

Weary is the fifth newcomer that is set to join the WWU program for the fast-approaching 2019-20 season, joining 6-6 forward Jaivion Garrett (Seattle, WA/Rainier Beach), 6-5 guard Christian Zamora out of Lynden High School, 6-5 guard/forward Bryce Knox out of Mt. San Antonio College and high-scoring guard Sean Kirk out of Edmonds Community College.

The Vikings return a large majority of their roster with only one senior on the 2018-19 team. All-GNAC first-team selection Trevor Jasinsky returns for his senior season with over 1,000 career points, and starters Siaan Rojas (out with injury last season) and 7-foot center Logan Schilder (redshirted last season) also return to the court.
