Vikings Take Winning Streak on the Road

WWU closes out first half of the GNAC schedule with key road games at Seattle Pacific and Saint Martin's

WHAT'S HAPPENING

The WWU men's basketball team (12-4, 7-1 GNAC) closes out the first half of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule with a pair of road games at first-place Seattle Pacific and defending regular-season champion Saint Martin's. Both games will stream live online via GNAC.tv.

 

THE RECORD

The Vikings enter play this week with an overall 12-4 record with current 8-game winning streak. WWU has won 10 of its last 11 games dating back to the 91-69 win over Colorado Christian on Nov. 29. The season record includes a 9-2 mark in home games (3-2 away).

BIG BATTLE IN SEATTLE

Thursday's game vs. the SPU Falcons features the top two teams in the GNAC standings, with WWU 7-1 in league play and SPU at 8-0. The Falcons carry a 12-game winning streak into the game, with the Vikings winners of their last eight games. 

 

ROAD TRIPPIN

This week's games against the I-5 rivals begins a season-high four-game road trip and continues a stretch of six out of eight games away from Bellingham. Following this week's games at SPU and SMU will remain on the road and travel to play Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho (1/30) and in-state rival Central Washington in Ellensburg (2/1).

WEST REGION MEDIA POLL

The Vikings moved into a tie for 6th place in this week's D2SIDA West Region Media Poll gathering 23 votes. Moved up from being ranked No. 9 last week and No. 10 in the previous poll.


TOUGH SCHEDULE

WWU has seven of the 10 teams that are currently listed in the D2SIDA West Region Media Poll on the 2019-20 schedule, already having played No. 1 UC San Diego, No. 2 Azusa Pacific, No. 6 Cal Poly Pomona and No. 9 Concordia-Irvine. Play No. 5 Seattle Pacific this week.

 

WINNING STREAK

WWU carries an 8-game winning streak into Thursday's game at SPU (who owns a 12-game win streak). This is the longest win streak by the Vikings since a 10-gamer Dec. 16, 2017-Jan. 20, 2018. This is the 22ndwinning streak of 8-or-more games in program history.

 

GREEN FILLING UP THE STAT SHEET

Sophomore Jalen Green is averaging 14.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 1.3 steals per game this season, and is the Vikings leading scorer averaging 15.5 points per game in GNAC play. He is shooting 51.9% (84-for-162) and is 39-for-47 from the free throw line (83.0%). During the 8-game winning streak 16.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.6 blocks per game (59.3 FG%). Coming off a big week where he averaged 20.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, including a 24-point, 13-rebound double-double vs. Concordia.

·         Sharp Shooters – 4th in the GNAC with a 47.2 FG% (449-for-952) and at 37.9% (142-for-375) in 3FG.

·         Climbing the Charts  Trevor Jasinsky has scored 1,320 points, tied for 13th-best in program history.

·         The Return of Rojas  Siaan Rojas is averaging 10.2 pts, 5.8 reb, 3.2 ast in 9 games back on the court.

·         Schilder Success  Logan Schilder is 2nd in the GNAC in FG% (62.7), 3rd in blocked shots (1.6/game) and 7th in rebounding (6.8/game)…6th in WWU and 13th in GNAC history with 121 career blocked shots.

·         Green in GNAC  Jalen Green leads WWU averaging 15.5 points per game in 8 GNAC games.

·         Preseason Favorites – WWU was selected as the preseason favorites to win the GNAC.

·         Iron Man  Trevor Jasinsky has played in all 106 games possible in his WWU career (75 starts).

TREVOR THE GREAT

Senior forward Trevor Jasinsky is tied for 13th in WWU history with 1,320 points in 106 career games. Is averaging 12.5 points per game during his career. Over his last two seasons as a junior and senior (2018-19 & 2019-20), Jasinsky is averaging 18.2 points per game. The Camas native also ranks 6th in WWU and 28th in GNAC history with 175 career 3-pointers made. Jasinsky is averaging 15.3 points per game this season (10thin GNAC) and 3.5 assists per game (tied for 4th in GNAC).

MINNIS TO SOCIETY

Redshirt freshman guard D'Angelo Minnis is averaging 12.2 points and 3.3 assists per game while starting all 16 games this season. Scored in double-digits in last four games, averaging 16.5 points.

 

BIG BLOCK

Logan Schilder ranks 3rd in the GNAC (41st in NCAA II) averaging 1.6 blocked shots per game this season. The 7-footer has recorded 121 career blocked shots, 14th-most among active NCAA II players and 6th-most in WWU history (13th in GNAC history).

TICKET TALK

Tickets for all of WWU's home game can be purchased online in advance by visitingWWUVikings.com/MBB_Tickets. The box office in Carver Gym will also open one hour prior to tip-off for each home game.

 

CARVER SUCCESS

The Vikings are 9-2 in Carver Gym this season, continuing the success in the on-campus venue from over the years. WWU owns an all-time record of 573-172 (.769) in Carver Gym, with head coach Tony Dominguez leading the Vikings to a 72-15 record (.828).

 

GNAC PRESEASON COACHES POLL

The Vikings were announced as the preseason favorite to win the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, topping the voting with 112 points and six first-place votes.

 

THE COACHING STAFF

Head coach Tony Dominguez is in his eighth season at the helm of the program, and 25th overall at WWU. Dominguez has led the Vikings to a 160-70 record (.696) and was the 2016-17 GNAC Coach of the Year. He is assisted by David Dunham (4th season), Bob Hofstetter (7th season), Atiavo Jude (7th season) and Director of Basketball Operations Jonathan Kim.

 

1,500 WINS (AND COUNTING)

WWU reached the 1,500 wins mark in program history with a 126-72 win over Capilano on December 15, 2019. According to the NCAA record book, WWU is the 12th program currently at the NCAA Division II level that has recorded at least 1,500 wins (currently 1,506 all-time wins).

 

ROAD SWEEP IN ALASKA

Recorded a pair of come-from-behind road wins two weeks ago to record a third consecutive Alaskan sweep with a 74-70 win at Alaska Anchorage and 71-63 at Alaska Fairbanks. WWU battled back from halftime deficits in both games to extend the winning streak to six straight. D'Angelo Minnis led the way averaging 17.0 points per game, followed by Trevor Jasinsky at 13.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. WWU recorded the wins despite shooting just 26.3% from 3-point range (10-for-38) and 41.2% from the field (49-for-119), but won the rebounding battle (80-69).

 

GNAC TEAM OF THE WEEK

The Vikings were selected as the GNAC Team of the Week following the two road wins in Alaska. WWU became the second program in the 19-year history of the GNAC to record a third consecutive road sweep of the Alaskan schools, and has now recorded seven road sweeps of UAA and UAF in program history, tying Seattle Pacific for the most in league history.

One of the premier basketball programs in NCAA Division II, WWU has recorded a 20-win season in eight of the last 11 seasons. WWU is a six-time Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion and has appeared in the NCAA II Elite 8 three times.
