The WWU women's basketball team (13-5, 7-3 GNAC) opens the second half of the GNAC season this week closing out a four-game homestand hosting Concordia on Thursday and Western Oregon on Saturday. Both games feature a 7 pm tip-off on WECU Court in Carver Gym.Â

The Vikings enter play this week with an overall 13-5 record, have won three straight and are 9-2 over the last 11 games. WWU is 7-3 in GNAC play to tie for 3rd in the conference standings, one game back of second place Northwest Nazarene. Overall are 7-0 in home games this season in Carver Gym and 6-5 in games away from Bellingham.

VIKINGS SELECTED AS GNAC TEAM OF THE WEEK
WWU recorded a pair of wire-to-wire last week over No. 4/5 Alaska Anchorage (71-64) and Alaska Fairbanks (88-47) to earn GNAC Team of the Week honors. The Vikings combined to shoot 53.5% (61-for-114) and were 11-for-26 (42.3%) from 3-point range. Emma Duff led Western averaging 14.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, including a 20-point effort in the upset win over UAA. Lexie Bland scored in double digits in both games (22 points) and recorded a team-high 11 assists.

The Vikings have played only seven home games so far this season, the fewest amongst all GNAC teams, but are 7-0 in games played in Carver Gym. WWU is 484-90 (.843) all-time in Carver Gym, with head coachCarmen Dolfo leading the team to a 290-57 (.836) record in the on-campus facility.

SCHWECKE PASSES 1,000 CAREER POINT MILESTONE
Senior center Anna Schwecke crossed the 1,000-point milestone for her collegiate career, now with 1,008 points in 109 games. She has scored 834 of those points 76 games as a Vikings (73 starts) for an 11.0 points per game average. She played her freshman season at Colorado-Colorado Springs (174 points). She is 166 points shy of reaching 1,000 points as a Viking.

Head coach Carmen Dolfo recorded her 600th career win on Jan. 11 vs. Seattle Pacific, in her 840th career game. Head coach Carmen Dolfo is in her 29th season leading the program, owning an all-time record of 603-241 (.714) to rank amongst the active and career leaders at the NCAA Division II level for career wins and winning percentage. Dolfo has led the Vikings to 16 trips to the NCAA Championships and a pair of Elite 8 appearances. She became the winningest coach in WWU Athletics history when she collected victory No. 519 on Dec. 3, 2015 vs. Alaska to pass former men's basketball coach Brad Jackson (518-279). WWU has recorded 20 seasons with 20-or-more wins under Dolfo.

The Vikings were picked to finish 2nd in the 2019-20 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll. The Vikings received 107 points, including three first-place votes, to finish two points behind conference preseason favorite Central Washington (109 points).

The Vikings earned a historic victory against Saint Martin's (69-58) on Jan. 13, 2018 to record win No. 1,000 in program history. According to available records, WWU became just the 16th women's college basketball team (all levels/divisions) to reach 1,000 all-time victories, and is currently at 1,035 all-time wins with a program winning percentage of .734 (1035-376).

One of the premier basketball programs in NCAA Division II, recording a 20-win season in seven of the last 11 seasons, and 34 times in the 48-year history of the program.
