ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Western Washington University senior center
Logan Schilder recorded a 17-point, 14-rebound double-double to help lead the Vikings to a 74-70 road victory over Alaska Anchorage Thursday night at the Alaska Airlines Center in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
WWU won its fifth consecutive game to improve to 9-4 overall and kept its hold on second place in the GNAC with a 4-1 mark in conference play. UAA dropped to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in league play.
"Our play and success lately has been defensive driven," said WWU head coach
Tony Dominguez. "I am really happy with the focus and intensity the team has had in these recent games and the defense has been critical to our success."
Schilder was 8-for-12 shooting from the field and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds for his second double-double of the season and seventh of his career.
"Logan had his best game of the season. He was very active and focused tonight on offense and defense," added
Dominguez on his senior 7-foot center. "He effected the game with and without the ball tonight."
Redshirt freshman point guard
D'Angelo Minnis added 16 points and 6 assists in 39 minutes of action and sophomore guard/forward
Jalen Green scored 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting. Senior forward
Trevor Jasinsky contributed 11 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and one steal.
Overall the Vikings shot 43.3% (26-for-60) and were 5-for-22 (22.7%) from 3-point range to secure their third consecutive road win over the Seawolves. WWU was 17-for-25 from the free throw line, including 15-for-20 in the second half.
UAA was led by 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting by Oggie Pantovic and 15 points and 9 rebounds by Tyler Brimhall. Guard DeAndre Osuigwe neared triple-double territory with 8 points, 9 assists and 6 rebounds. The Seawolves shot 40.7% from the floor (24-for-59) and were 12-for-27 from 3-point range (44.4%).

THE TURNING POINT
Anchorage connected on three consecutive 3-pointers as part of a 9-1 run early in the second half to build a 50-43 lead with 16:24 remaining. WWU answered with a 15-1 spurt to turn the 7-point deficit into a 7-point lead at 58-51 with 10:51 left in the game. UAA battled back to take a 64-63 lead with 4:24 left, but four consecutive points by
RJ Secrest sealed the win for the Vikings. WWU ended the game on an 11-6 run, with Secrest scoring six of his seven points over the last four minutes of the game.
SERIES HISTORY VS. ALASKA ANCHORAGE
The Vikings won in Anchorage at the Alaska Airlines Center for the third consecutive season, marking the second-longest road winning streak vs. the Seawolves trailing only a four-game road win streak from 2011-14. WWU has won six of the last eight in the series and lead the all-time series, including a 10-10 record in Anchorage.
