Vikings Put Away Saints in Key GNAC Victory

Senior Trevor Jasinsky scores game-high 21 points to lead Vikings to 10-point win over Saint Martin’s

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University senior forward Trevor Jasinsky scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Vikings to a 10-point 71-61 victory over Saint Martin's Thursday night in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

 

WWU improved to 16-9 overall and remains in a three-way tie for 2nd place in the GNAC at 11-6 in conference play. The Vikings are now 11-3 in Carver Gym this season, with a 7-1 GNAC mark, and host conference leader Seattle Pacific Saturday night in Carver Gym.

 

Jasinsky, a senior from Camas, scored his 21 points on 8-for-13 shooting to log his sixth 20-point game of the season and first since January 2 in a 80-69 win over Central Washington. The senior also grabbed 6 rebounds and contributed 3 assists and 3 blocked shots. 

 

Redshirt freshman guard D'Angelo Minnis scored 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting, all from 3-point range. Senior center Logan Schilder neared a double-double with 7 points and 9 rebounds and senior forward Cameron Retherford scored 9 points on 3-for-6 shooting. 

 

WWU tied a season single-game high with 14 3-pointers, going 14-for-35 (40.0%) from beyond the arc. Overall the Vikings shot 45.0% (27-for-60) and were 3-for-6 from the free throw line.

 

Saint Martin's (5-21, 3-14 GNAC) was led by 18 points off the bench by Alex Schumacher, who was 7-for-12 from the field in 33 minutes of action. CJ Jennings added 16 points and 6 rebounds and Logan Rooney had 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting. SMU was limited to 39.0% shooting for the game (23-for-59) and were 5-for-21 from 3-point range.

 

THE MOMENT THAT MATTERED

The Vikings trailed 29-27 with 1:12 remaining in the first half, made a pair of 3-pointers by D'Angelo Minnis and Trevor Jasinsky swung the lead back to the Vikings at 33-29 heading into the half. WWU carried that momentum into the start of the second half, with 3-pointers by Minnis and Siaan Rojasextending the run to 12-0 to grow the lead to 39-29. The Vikings did not trail in the second half, growing the lead to as many as 18 points with 6:41 remaining in the game.

 

ANDERSON TIES SCHOOL RECORD

Senior guard Leif Anderson was 2-for-3 shooting from 3-point range and is now 9-for-10 over his last three games from beyond the arc. With his made 3-pointer at the 10:18 mark in the first half, Anderson tied the WWU all-time record with eight consecutive made 3-pointers, matching the records set by Harold McAllister in 2007-08 and John Allen in 2010-11.

 

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

Senior forward Trevor Jasinsky scored 13 points in the first half to lead the Vikings to a 33-29 lead at the break. His 3-pointer with 12 seconds remaining in the half gave the Vikings a four-point cushion heading into the second half. The Vikings shot 41.9% for the half, connecting on 13-of-31 shots, including 6-for-17 from 3-point range. Alex Schumacher led the Saints off the bench with 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting. SMU was at 35.5% for the half, going 11-for-31 from the field and 4-for-10 from 3-point range.

WWU (16-9, 11-6 GNAC) remains at home hosting No. 20 nationally-ranked Seattle Pacific on Saturday with tip-off at 7 pm on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

 

SERIES HISTORY VS. SAINT MARTIN'S

WWU earned the season sweep over Saint Martin's, also winning 85-78 in Lacey on January 25. WWU is now 4-3 vs. the Saints over the last seven games in the series since 2017-18 and 21-5 since the 2008-09 season. The Vikings now lead the all-time series 136-64 and are 11-1 in the last 12 meetings in Bellingham.

 

GNAC STANDINGS

Here is an updated look at the GNAC standings through the games played on Thursday, with the Vikings remaining in a second-place tie with Western Oregon and Northwest Nazarene at 11-6 in conference play. WWU has three games remaining in the 2019-20 regular season, with two of the three in Carver Gym.
