Tony Dominguez has announced that guard
Lucas Holden will join the Vikings in 2020-21 as a transfer from Santiago Canyon College.
Holden is a 6-7 left-handed guard that started all 59 games over two seasons at the junior college based in Orange, California. In two seasons for the Hawks Holden averaged 8.5 points, 2.5 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game, while shooting a combined 49.4% from the field (175-for-354). His shooting totals included a 49-for-121 mark from 3-point range (40.5%). Holden will be a junior in eligibility for the Vikings when he arrives in Bellingham.
"Lucas is a polished and gritty junior college transfer that was a key part to a championship team last season," said Dominguez. "He is a solid left-handed shooter that had high basketball IQ and will be a great addition to our program."
As a sophomore in 2019-20, Holden appeared in 30 games, making 29 starts, to help lead Santiago Canyon to a 28-2 record and a 14-2 league mark to win the Orange Empire Conference title. The Hawks reached the CCCAA Elite 8 prior to the cancelation of the playoffs.
Holden earned Second Team Orange Empire Conference honors in 2019-20 averaging 8.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. He connected on 96-of-182 shots from the field for a .527 field goal percentage and was 36-for-81 from 3-point range (44.4%).
"I am excited to join the basketball program at WWU and compete for a national championship," said Holden. "I am thankful to my coaches and teammates at Santiago Canyon, as well as Matt Elkin and Jake Stanbrough at West Coast Elite for helping me on this journey. I can't wait to get started."
As a standout student-athlete Holden was also honored as an Academic All-Star selection with a 3.66 GPA. Holden is a product of Canyon High School in Anaheim Hills, California.
Holden is the fifth addition to WWU's 2020-21 recruiting class, joining forward
Dakota Ayala, a 6-8 transfer from Concordia-Portland, guard
Daniel Hornbuckle, a 6-0 guard out of Portland Community College, 6-7 forward
Darius Gary out of Portland Community College and high-scoring guard
Anjaylo "Jello" Lloyd from Shoreline Community College.
The Viking are coming off a 20-10 season in 2019-20 and won the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament to advance to the NCAA Division II Championships, but the West Regional was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
