Tony Dominguez has announced that guard
Kai Johnson will join the Vikings in 2020-21 as a freshman out of Olympia High School.
Johnson is a local product out of Olympia High School, where he helped lead the Bears to a 4
th-place finish in the 2020 4A WIAA State Championships. As a senior Johnson scored 514 points, averaging 17.1 points per game while shooting over 55.0% from the field. His senior season totals also included 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game.
"Kai is an athletic guard that has a very high basketball IQ," said Dominguez. "He is gritty, tough and will be a great fit to our program. He comes from a great high school program in Olympia that former Viking Anye Turner came from and we are excited for Kai to be a Viking."
Johnson earned First Team 4A South Puget Sound League honors and was selected to
The Olympian All-Area team in 2019-20. As a junior he was a second-team all-league selection after scoring 296 points.
"I'm excited to be a Viking and join the basketball program at WWU," said Johnson. "It is a great fit for me to continue my basketball career in a program with high level coaches and players. Go Viks!"
Johnson is the sixth addition to WWU's 2020-21recruiting class, joining forward
Dakota Ayala, a 6-8 transfer from Concordia-Portland, guard
Daniel Hornbuckle, a 6-0 guard out of Portland Community College, 6-7 forward
Darius Gary out of Portland Community College, high-scoring guard
Anjaylo "Jello" Lloyd from Shoreline Community College and 6-7 guard
Lucas Holden out of Santiago Canyon College.
The Viking are coming off a 20-10 season in 2019-20 and won the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament to advance to the NCAA Division II Championships, but the West Regional was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
