Vikings Fall to No. 4 SPU 3-0

WWU falls to 10-2-1 on the season and 7-2-0 in GNAC play

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – In a battle of two ranked teams, No. 4 Seattle Pacific University defeated No. 12 Western Washington University on a rainy Thursday evening at Harrington Field.

The Falcons set the tone early scoring just 51 seconds into the contest, and never looked back adding a late first-half goal and an early second-half marker in the 3-0 victory.

WWU suffered just its second loss of the season – both vs. SPU – dropping to 10-2-2 overall and moved to second place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings at 7-2-0. SPU improved to 10-1-1 overall and retook the top spot in the table at 7-1-1 in GNAC play.

In a rematch of the 1-0 overtime victory by the Falcons on October 9 in Seattle where the only goal was scored in the 95th minute, the Falcons needed just 51 seconds to get off to the quick start. SPU capitalized on a defensive miscue near midfield by the Vikings, with forward Sophia Chilczuk gathering the turnover and sprinted towards the goal. The play left Chilczuk in a one-on-one situation with WWU goalkeeper Natalie Dierickx, who was drawn off her line, leaving a streaking Makena Rietz open for a controlled tap-in after a well-time pass from Chilczuk.

The Falcons made it 2-0 late in the first half when Madison Ibale headed home a free kick from Emmy Moore from close quarters. The free kick came from the left flank 28 yards out, with Moore's right-footed delivery sailing to the far post where Ibale connected from close quarters.

SPU added a third goal in the 57th minute when Chilczuk scored her fourth goal of the season off assists by Sophie Beadle and Chloe Gellhaus.

WWU recorded 11 shots in the game with five on frame. SPU had 14 shots (8 on target). WWU goalkeeper Natalie Dierickx made five saves.

WWU was shut out for just the second time this season (0-0 tie at Colorado School of Mines).
