No. 19 Vikings Earn Road Sweep Over UAA

Vikings extend lead in the GNAC at 11-1 in conference play, 15-4 overall

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Led by a 16-kill, 10-dig double-double from junior outside hitter Gabby Gunterman, the No. 19 nationally-ranked Western Washington University volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep over rival Alaska Anchorage Saturday night at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Game scores were 25-22, 25-23, 25-19 in favor of the Vikings. WWU improved to 37-19 in the all-time against UAA while recording the first sweep against its conference rivals since 2012. WWU (2017-18-19) and UAA (2015-16) have combined for the last five GNAC titles.

WWU extended its winning streak to 10 consecutive matches to improve to 15-4 overall and expanded its lead at the top of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings with a 11-1 league mark.

For the first time since opening the Alaska Airlines Center in 2014, UAA dropped consecutive home matches after falling Thursday in four sets to Simon Fraser. The Seawolves dropped to 16-8 overall, and after opening GNAC play at 8-0, have dropped three of four to slip to 9-3 in conference play, two games behind the Vikings in the standings.

"This was a great collective effort and I thought we did a great job of playing point for point," said WWU head coach Diane Flick-Williams. "I am very proud of the effort we had tonight. I have said this before, but road wins in the GNAC are hard to come by, so I appreciate what our team did this weekend against two good teams."

After fighting through back-and-forth first and second sets featuring 18 tie scores and nine lead changes, the Vikings completed the sweep with a convincing 25-19 win in the third set.

In addition to her 16 kills and 10 digs, Gunterman also tallied one service ace and three blocks to finish with a match-high 19.0 points.

Sophomore outside hitter Calley Heilborn just missed another double-double recording nine kills (.320 hitting pct.) and had 20 digs.

"Gabby and Calley had another great night at the pins and on the defensive end, anchoring our team," added Flick-William on her All-American outside hitters.

Sophomore libero Kasey Woodruff added 16 digs and sophomore setter Malia Aleaga ran the offense with 46 assists. Junior middle Chloe Roetcisoender also had 10 kills on a .429 hitting percentage and contributed four blocks for 12.0 points. Junior opposite Tess Biscup had four blocks and six kills. Sophomore defensive specialist Tupu Lologo also had a match-high three service aces.

The Seawolves were led by 11 kills from Lisa Jaunet and a match-high 25 digs by Talia Leauanae.
