BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's basketball team led wire-to-wire in a 20-point victory over Azusa Pacific University Saturday night to close out play in the 2021 Chuck Randall Classic.
The Vikings evened their season record at 2-2 with the 83-63 victory over the Cougars (0-4) Saturday night on WECU Court in Carver Gym. WWU defeated Concordia University of Irvine 87-77 Friday night to finish 2-0 during the tournament.
Junior guard/forward
Jalen Green earned tournament MVP honors with his 22-point, five-rebound performance on 10-for-14 shooting. Green averaged 20.0 points and shot 72.0% from the field (18-for-25) in the pair of WWU victories.
Five Vikings reached double-figures in scoring, with senior forward
Luke Lovelady pouring in 19 points on 8-for-9 shooting. Senior forward
Dakota Ayala came off the bench to score 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting and tied Lovelady for the team-high with six rebounds.
Guards
Daniel Hornbuckle (12 points, 4-for-8 FG) and
D'Angelo Minnis (10 points, 7 assists) joined Lovelady and Green on the Chuck Randall Classic All-Tournament Team.
WWU shot a scorching 60.0% from the field (33-for-55) and were 7-for-16 (43.8%) from 3-point range. The Vikings out-scored APU 44-30 in the paint and held a 35-25 advantage in rebounds. Never trailing in the game and leading by as many as 25 points, Western had a 19-8 assist-to-turnover ratio to help control the tempo of the game.
Azusa Pacific was led by 18 points by Justin Hemsley (8-for-14 FG) and 15 points by all-tournament selection McKelary Robertson. APU shot 41.3% from the field (26-for-63) and were limited to 6-for-22 (27.3%) from 3-point range.

Western Washington junior guard/forward
Jalen Green headlined the 10-player Chuck Randall Classic All-Tournament Team by being selected as the MVP. Green averaged 20.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in the two wins, shooting 18-for-25 (72.0%) from the field. He also had six assists and recorded four blocked shots.

SEATTLE PACIFIC 90, CONCORDIA 80
Seattle Pacific concluded a 2-0 weekend at the Chuck Randall Classic with a 90-80 win over Concordia University of Irvine. Zack Paulsen scored a career-high 19 points on 6-for-9 shooting and Divant'e Moffitt had 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting to lead the Falcons. Harry Cavell was 7-for-12 from the field in his 17-point, 4-rebound performance. SPU built a 44-32 lead at the half and held off the Eagles late in the game for the 10-point victory to even the season record at 3-3. Wayne Arnold scored 25 points on 11-for-26 shooting and Josh Caston was 9-for-14 from the field for 24 points.
