Vikings Net 80-Point Victory Over Northwest Indian College

Erwin Weary Jr. (36 points) and Nic Welp (30 points) power WWU's 139-59 victory

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Led by a pair of 30-point performances from junior guard Erwin Weary Jr. and freshman forward Nic Welp, the Western Washington University men's basketball team cruised to a 139-59 victory over Northwest Indian College Tuesday evening on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

The Vikings won their fifth consecutive game to improve to 5-2 on the season, nearly setting single-game program records for most points in a game and margin of victory. The 139 points were two shy of the record 141 set vs. Northwest in 1989 and the 80-point margin of victory was just below the 89-point win in the 141-52 victory in the same game vs. Northwest.

Weary Jr. was 10-for-15 from the field scoring a game-high 36 points, also recording four steals, five rebounds and three assists in 28 minutes off the bench.

Welp had a 30-point, 10-rebound double-double on 13-for-17 shooting and recorded five blocked shots.

The big performances marked the first pair of 30-point games by a Viking duo since Taylor Stafford and Deandre Dickson each had 31 points in a 103-98 win at Simon Fraser on December 30, 2016.

Freshman guard Kai Johnson added 20 points on 10-for-11 shooting and dished out a game-high six assists. Redshirt freshman forward Jaivion Garrett neared a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

WWU did not play three of its normal starters with forward Luke Lovelady, forward/guard Jalen Green and D'Angelo Minnis all not suiting up for the non-conference game as they prepare for Saturday's GNAC opener vs. Simon Fraser.

Overall the Vikings shot 66.7% from the field (58-for-87), falling one short of the record 59 field goals made in a 1988 game vs. Trinity Western. WWU was also 11-for-24 from 3-point range (45.8%).

Northwest Indian College, from the nearby Lummi Nation, was led by 17 points from guard Kobe Jones, who shot 7-for-13 from the field and connected on a trio of 3-pointers. Malachi Rogers added 13 points on 5-for-12 shooting and Nick Valencia had 11 points. The Eagles were 9-for-30 from 3-point range in the game.
