Vikings Route Holy Names in 51-Point Win

WWU improves to 9-0 on the season with dominating 83-32 road victory

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Western Washington University women's basketball team closed out a perfect run through its non-conference schedule recording an 83-32 victory over Holy Names University Friday evening in Tobin Gymnasium.

The No. 8 (D2SIDA) and No. 10 (WBCA) nationally-ranked Vikings remained perfect on the season at 9-0, which includes an 8-0 non-conference mark (1-0 GNAC) and seven road victories. WWU extended its winning streak to 15 consecutive games (includes 6-0 record during the spring 2021 season), tied for 5th-longest in program history. The 9-0 start is tied for 6th-best in the 51-year history of the program and it has been 650 days since the Vikings last suffered a defeat on March 7, 2020 in the GNAC Championship game vs. Alaska Anchorage.

WWU completed its road trip to the Bay Area with a 2-0 record, with both wins coming in Tobin Gymnasium. The Vikings defeated Academy of Art 57-43 on Tuesday and had its Thursday contest against Dominican canceled due to health and safety protocols. The Vikings 51-point victory Friday is tied for the fourth-largest margin of victory during the NCAA era (since 1998-99).

Junior guard Mollie Olson and senior guard Dani Iwami led four Vikings in double-figure scoring with 14 points each. Olson was 6-for-10 from the field and 2-for-3 from 3-point range, adding three rebounds and a pair of assists. Iwami was 5-for-8 from the field and 4-for-6 from beyond the arc, also contributing a pair of assists and a steal.

Senior guard Emma Duff continues to inch toward the 1,000-career point milestone with 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting, and is now six points short of 1,000 for her career. Duff scored seven of the Vikings first 12 points to build a lead that was never contested. Duff neared a triple double with seven rebounds and seven assists in 27 minutes of action.

Freshman post player Truitt Reilly added 10 points and seven rebounds, and senior guard Monique Fierke scored a career-high nine points on three 3-pointers. All 10 players that dressed for the Vikings scored at least three points.

The Vikings paired their hot outside shooting with a dominating performance inside, outscoring the Hawks in the paint 40-14 and holding the rebounding edge 37-12.

Holy Names (0-9) was led by 10 points on 3-for-12 shooting by Jazmine Soto and eight points from Jayden Benitez.

THE MOMENT THAT MATTERED
After leading 19-9 through the first quarter, the Vikings turned it up a notch in the second quarter using a 15-2 run to build a 34-13 lead. Dani Iwami made a pair of 3-pointers during this stretch and Monique Fierke connected on a triple to expand the lead to 21 points.
