Women's Golf Places 6th in Colorado

Two-day tournament condensed to one day with Vikings playing 36 holes

3/21/2021 7:55:00 PM

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Western Washington University women's golf team placed 6th out of 14 teams at the El Cheapo Classic played Sunday at Walking Stick Golf Course.

The tournament was scheduled to be a 36-hole, two-day competition, but imminent weather in the area caused the tournament to play all 36 holes on Sunday.

The Vikings shot matching rounds of 39-over-par 327 to finish at 78-over-par 654. Western was three shots back of Chadron State (+75, 651) in 5th place and well ahead of 7th-place MSU Denver (+91, 667).

Second-year freshman Elise Sumner (North Tustin, CA/Foothill) led the Vikings placing 11th in the 77-player field with consecutive rounds of 7-over-par 79 to finish at 14-over-par 158. Sumner was coming off a season-opening 5th-place finish at the Nighthawks Invitational, and again was the highest placing Great Northwest Athletic Conference golfer in the field.

Second-year freshman Sophia Schmidt (Bellingham, WA) tied for 17th place at 17-over-par 161 (80-81) and freshman Danielle Bailey (Queenstown, NZ) tied for 25th at 20-over-par 164.

"It was a grind out on the course today," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "We played in 75-degrees and sunshine yesterday, and today it was windy and very cold. It was challenging enough mentally trying to prepare for a 36-hole day, but to throw in very tough conditions I thought the team was very solid. We will learn from today and get better."

Colorado Mesa won the team title finishing the one-day tournament at 44-over-par 620, recording a 15-stroke victory over Western New Mexico (+59, 635). Alpine Hickstein of Chadron State won individual medalist honors finishing at 6-over-par 150 with rounds of 2-under-par 70 and 8-over-par 80.
